i have seen many a bird and raccoon get caught in a combine header. Some died there, some escaped to likely die elsewhere. Not something I'd like to experience

Least of my worries in a area only accessible by air, cell service would be unlikely as well.

Would be more concerned about a heart attack, infected wounds, food poisoning, intestinal parasites, etc, any of which without reasonable access to treatment could be fatal.

Alaska is so varied and different that the different regions are like another world. Getting 20 acres on the coast is totally different than 20 acres somewhere in the interior.

Coastal property is at a premium though.

That sounds nice. Would probably go twice a year, one for the salmon runs.

That acreage is pearlington is short pine, Sandy soil, and few small deer Can't build due to buffer zone

However. There is some land in pearlington area I would love to own. In log town. By the Koch cenetery. Beautiful property with neat history

Get 5 acres on Lake Louise near Glennallen, order a cabin kit from Spenards in Anchorage, buy a beater truck and a couple 4 wheelers, store them near that Anchorage airport and make an annual moose hunting trip.

since you didn't say where in Alaska you were looking I guess your question is more about the pros/cons of being remote and off the grid. I have a place in south TX that's a 10hr drive from my house and only accessible by boat or plane

I wish it were closer because I'd love to go more often but when I do it's paradise on earth not having to deal with the general public...just family and like minded friends and no supervision or visibility to johnny law

Depends, you have to get the right system, Globalstar loses coverage the closer you get to polar regions. Iridum claims to have worldwide coverage, but my experience with them in the Southern Ocean South of the Antarctic Circle was poor at best.

Have had no ( or at least very little) problem with iridium
From Prudhoe bay down to Homer, a few dropped calls between satellites but not bad

Satellite service is pretty good as far as coverage. Cell service sucks though, outside the main cities.

The off the grid types still rely on radio quite a bit

Not really sure how much "investment" versus "albatross". That far away, I am thinking more of the latter. I would want something closer by. Then again, I have just found that it is just cheaper to rent a damn place for a few days and go. Let someone else worry about upkeep, utilities, and taxes, etc.

I'd never worry about recreational land as a financial investment, but maybe that's me. The peace an enjoyment is an investment in myself.

Sounds high if you can only fly there a couple times a year at significant cost. I bought 40 acres for $1500 per acre, but I can get there in my truck in 2 hrs. And it has timber$$$.

Why buy land to go on a once a year hunt? You can go on the once a year hunt without buying the land. Bad idea, bad investment.
