Me too. I chose this instead of 45-70 and 35 whelen because it was a little bit different.
I realized several ammo crisis’ later, that I had indeed fricked up. I don’t think the other two calibers are a whole lot cheaper, but they are more available at least.

TC Encore in .35 Whelen with a 6x42 FX2 Leupold. It's had a trigger job done and shoots very well.

I have a Traditions in line 50 cal.

It's very accurate even with patched ball, but pistol bullets in sabots are better.

I have two. 35 Whelen - CVA scout. Henry single shot 350 legend. Henry has nice looking guns if you are into that and it comes in many calibers.

How do you like the Henry? I’ve been eye balling one in 350 legend.

One advantage of the 350 legend is that you can buy a 350 legend upper in AR and get 30-30 type performance in an AR platform outside of single shot szn.

Get a Percussion rifle or even a Flintlock if you want to go waaaaay back. There is a ton of fun learning to use a Flintlock as well.

35 Whelen is a 35-06. It’ll have the most reach of the “primitives”

I’ve had a .38-55 WIN in an H&R Target Classic back when Mississippi went to the new primitive. It’s very accurate. The longest kill I’ve made with it is 190 yards. I’ve killed a bunch of deer with that rifle.

Do you steal reloading components from a firearms museum to get ammo for all your crazy calibers? That thing looks wild.

.38-55 WIN

I have a friend that has one and he loves it. Soft shooter and accurate.

Henry sells a lever in that caliber. You can get a brand new one.

I order from Buffalo Bore. They make a “hot” load in 255 grain.
A lot of 38-55 ammo is loaded light due to the chance that someone would put it in a 100 year old lever gun. They don’t want the liability. Pleasant to shoot.

highly recommend the CVA Scout in 35 Whelen for LA primitive rifle. They are accurate guns once you find the bullet the barrel likes. I chrono'ed some 200gr Noslers out of mine at 2800 fps and zero'ed at 1.5" high @ 100. Ballistics calculator says to expect 1.5" below crosshairs at 200. All deer I've shot are boom flop dead - they get knocked down. For an extra $150, Boyds sells wood stocks to dress it up if you want.

TC Encore in 35 sitting at Laffy Shooters right now

.35 Whelen I use it all season now. The ballistics are great for the area that I hunt (250 yards). The only issue I have seen is finding ammo. I'm sure if I looked in the off season I would find it more readily.

pay attention online and stores shelves in May-June and you will find 35 Whelen ammo. Do not start looking in Sept-Oct and expect to see anything.

One of the largest ammo manufacturers in the world uses the terms caliber and cartridge interchangeably. Stop being a dickhead.

Love it. I actually hunt with it more than anything else. I don’t have shots over 100 yards.

My next gun purchase is likely to be a Henry lever.

In the 'Sip, most folks use the 45/70 H & R Handi Rifle. It's likely the cheapest priced entry point and good out to 100 yards or so. I don't care to sight one in though.
