I would get a 4x4 for sure on which ever vehicle you buy. I had a Dodge truck and traded it in at 185,000. No major issues. I bought a Ford F 150 this time but I would not hesitate to buy another Dodge.

Skip the rebel and upgrade to a power wagon. A 3/4 ton solid front axle truck will take the abuse better.
Gas is expensive as hell compared to down here. Scratch that, everything is expensive as hell compared to down here.

I really like the tire tracks going up and down the seats. It lets me know I'm in a capable truck and not just paying for some gimmicky trim package

Couldn't resist, they are just too ridiculous.
I'm in the yota camp. I would probably go with a LC. Might be because I want one for myself.

I would get a Toyota Hilux in a heartbeat if we had them here. I drove one when I was living overseas...those frickers are indestructible, shame we can't get them here

Hope the OP is making baller money to pay the notes on a Landcruiser. Yes they are fine and will last forever but holy shite they are expensive.

Pops has the Rebel and it's a badass fricking truck. airbags, autoride, autoleveling, 4 heights (goes from ground to 4 inches of overall lift plus the ram boxes are the shite.

If you have the means and want something that will handle rough terrain for 200,000+ miles the correct answer is the Toyota Landcruiser.
A used 200 series LC will cost the same and still be more reliable and capable than that Ram. Or any truck really.

I watched several videos on the new Ram a few weeks ago. Very impressed by the looks and the features.

I would probably buy a Raptor just because overall I think Ford has somewhat better reliability, but if you like the Dodge, go for it.
Your best option would be a Tundra of some kind.

pagin rogertheshrubber, he is your man for all things Alaska...

Own an F150, but if I were in rural Alaska....
Tacoma, mild lift, good all terrain and winch.
No way I'm taking an unproven full size in legit backcountry.

I'd stay away from the Dodge...

The correct answer to all this is an XJ. You can find one cheap, they’ll go anywhere and when you’re done with it (if it ain’t to fricked up) you can sell it for what you paid.
They’re cheap to lift. Throw on some 33’s and there’s not many places you can’t get to. Best part is, if you do frick it up, you aren’t in it for much.
You can find a clean one for less than $4k and the 4.0 is a beast of a motor.
ETA for $4k you can find one already lifted and on 33’s or even 35’s

Air pumps are a $3K repair and Toyota won't extend the recall to all affected models.

I have the ram 4x4 ecodiesel and I love it.
I live out West up in the mountains....every hunting guide I have met drives a Ram 4x4.
So, Chevy vs ford is a Southern thing.
The guys out here who really must depend on their truck drive Dodge. Every one rolls with a spare battery, fyi.
Good luck in Alaska.

Man I've been reading up on the ecodiesel...the fuel economy is great. Is it the V8? How many mpgs you getting on it? Also, any pics?

quote:I have always heard bad things about the Dodge transmissions, compared to Ford and GM. This goes back to the early 2000's models, maybe before. That's always been the issue with those trucks.
I've got a 2016 Dodge 1500 for a work truck and the transmission does some odd shite.
I don't know if the newer ones ever resolved that, but if someone's 2016 model has that issue, I'd be leery of it.
