I'm looking to add a new rod to my arsenal. Specifically I'm looking to add a rod for river fishing spotted bass and smallies with 3/16 & 1/4oz spinnerbaits and small TX rigged and shakey-head soft plastics. I really like the length, feel, and look of a 6'8"-6'10" Medium power, Fast action rod with cork handle, preferably a split grip. 7' rods stick off my kayak and get hung up more often in the tight confines of river fishing.

I've already got this same type of rod in an X-Fast action that I love for topwater poppers and small jerkbaits, just looking for a similar rod with a slightly softer tip for the spinnerbaits and plastics.

I have a giftcard to Bass Pro so I've been looking at rods offered at either BPS or Cabela's (since you can now exchange gift cards between the 2 stores).

I would appreciate it if anyone with experience with any of the rods I've listed below or any other rods that fit my criteria would chime in:

Shimano® Exage Bass Casting Rods - $100

13 Fishing Omen Black 2 Casting Rods - $100

St. Croix Mojo Bass Casting Rod - $130

Temple Fork Outfitters Gary's Tactical Series (GTS) Casting Rod - $150

Shimano Curado Casting Rod - $160

Dobyns Sierra Casting Rods - $160

Team Lew's Custom Pro Series Casting Rod - $200

Wild Card not at Cabela's/BPS:
Abu Garcia Fantasista Regista Casting Rod - $200 (down from $500)
This is listed as a ML but the line and lure weights aren't far off of most of the rods I listed.

Thanks in advance for your feedback!

I bought my first dobyns the other day and after having used shimano, duckett, falcon, abu, etc and I couldn’t be happier. I can’t speak to your specific wants/needs but if you email dobyns then I’ve read Gary will usually personally respond and recommend a rod.

Look into the Denali Fission series also. They have a 6’8” Medium Fast for $90. I have a few Denali rods and love them.

Whichever one is made in usa. Personally I’m done with Chinese shite rods. Had a lews absolutely explode last year. Granted, I set the hook like a fricking man, but it was a brand new rod.

Falcon has been good to me. G loomis has been good to me. Lews was good on the replacement if you’re ok with riding around with busted shite all over your boat while everyone else is fishing.

No doubt falcon makes great rods, I just can't find one they make in the length, power and action that I'm looking for.

Get the St. Croix. they are awesome on replacement. That said, I still like my falcons.

Check out Falcon and Kistler rods. I like them and they are cheaper than a really high end rod but comparable.

And as others have said, buy from Tackle Warehouse. Significant savings there.

their terminology is slightly different but if you go to the falcon website there are charts with every explanation. Not to mention they make customizeable rods last time I checked and can make any combination/action you want.

They were at the Sportsman show in Gonzales. Very high quality! bait casting, spinning and heavier boat rods.

kistler Helium 3 6'9" medium heavy.

Its not stiff like a veritas. Perfect for 1/4 spinnerbaits and 3/6 -1/4oz texas rigs.

Hard to beat a kistler..

$260

I've heard great things about kistlers. That's too rich for my blood though unfortunately. I have $110 to spend at Cabela's which is making the other rods affordable. And MH is a little stiffer than I need, but could work. Most of the river bass I catch are 1lb or less, but they do occasionally approach 3lbs for spots and 4lbs for smallies. The lighter action rods are necessary for the smaller fish.

I have a Shimano Exage 6'10" Medium Heavy that I use to rip spoons through grass. Honestly, I really like the rod for $100. I think for the price point it's a great rod. Its not as good as my higher end rods, but at that price, I am not asking it to be. For what you need it to do, I think it would be perfect. The only thing I dislike is the hook keeper, which is at the bottom of the rod, and sucks because hooking the bait there wouldnt allow it to sit in my rod holder.

Last time I was in cabelas they had some Castaway Skeleton rods on sale for $100 ($200 originally)

Picked one up, but haven't used it yet so I can't tell you how it is from experience. I prefer a shorter rod butt (kayak fishing) and this one is pretty short. May get to try it out next weekend.

I picked up a Cajun Custom rod at the Sportsman show... pretty impressive demo, but again, I haven't been able to use it yet.

I've been a big fan of the Cabela's XML casting rods for the past few years, though they have Winn grips. Recommend looking at them hard.
