I would also not suggest you doctor your own loads for home defense. You never know if they're gonna work 100% of the time.

Plus, altering ammo to use in a self defense situation could result in some risk exposure for the shooter if it ends up in court.

By Coastie: What concerns me about many posters is how they fail to comprehend how quickly a home invasion occurs, how long 1 second is in that context, and how likely they are to get fumble-fisted when the reality of "this is really happening" sets in. This is a major risk, but all risks must be balanced.

By Tigerfoot: This is said alot, but the same crowd seems to also advocate bedside gun boxes that take "2 seconds", versus an unloaded gun that may take the same two seconds. And both require complex maneuvers in a very frightening situation.

Both do require manuevers during a tense situation (although neither should be "complex").

But Coastie is correct -- risks must be balanced.

If there are no kids in the home, and no psycho girlfriend, and no drunk hunting buddies -- have the weapon loaded (chamber and magazine) and "at hand."

But if it has to be secured, due to the presence of children or fools, one has to simply accept the fact that lockingd/securing a weapon will impede his ability to defend himself and/or his family.

Life is filled with trade-offs -- there is no free lunch.

I chose the term complex not out of my own personal feelings, but I was yielding to the notion that all kinds of bad things happen when trying to rack a slide in the heat of the moment. It is painted as a terribly difficult thing to do.

Maybe not everyone is using loaded in the same way. When i got a ticket for a loaded firearm on an NWR, there was nothing in the chamber.

I would rather not scare an intruder in my home, I would like them dead.

I never understood the "racking to scare away" argument. If someone breaks into my house I don't want them to even know I'm there, nor do I want them to see the round that comes out of nowhere to end their worthless life.

As far as I'm concerned, I'd prefer it if the last thing an intruder experiences is taking that first step into my property. After that he can explain everything to god or the devil if they exist.

The only thing that prevents the above from ever happening, which is also one of my greatest defensive assets if not the greatest, is my SchH3 (Schutzhund Title 3) German Shepherd Dog who just loves to patrol his territory during the night. If he doesn't finish the intruder off or get them hightailing it out of there in the first place, he'll at least make enough noise to not only alert me to the presence of an intruder but will also likely give me their position.

Shotguns and handguns are great for home defense, but a good dog, even if he's just a noisemaker, is right up there with them.

And I have an alarm system, but alarm systems are shite next to a good canine protecting his home, IMO.
