I agree 100%. He acted and did great but I would not have been as lucky.

I added a statement at the bottom of my OP apologizing for my aggressive tone. I was not in a good mood earlier and not in too good of one now (all nighters do that to me). If I insulted anyone, I am sorry.

An unloaded shotgun it a subpar club or boat paddle. Minimal self defense use.

If someone wants to keep a loaded gun in their home for self defense, I totaly support that.

However, this/these guns should be kept out of reach from children by all means.

Even if your child knows better.
Even if you don't have children.
My nephews come over from time to time, and disappear down the hall.
If my gun was on the nightstand or similar place, it could only take an instant for something bad to happen.

$200 for a good pistol safe is a good investment.

Never tried one. How fast can you get your gun out?

2 seconds longer than if its just in the drawer. I have the gun vault micro safe $100. Thinking of getting a Fort Knox that doesn't require batteries. It's $200 I think. But more reliable since no batteries.

It's an individual decision. One has to balance risk for his particular situation: speedy response in a home invasion vs. child accident. (note that AD is not in that equation...not an issue with modern firearms)

-If you're single and alone, there is no reason to have an empty chamber. Modern pistols are designed to have a round safely chambered.

-With kids around, you have to know your kids and your situation.

Heck, loaded weapons are kept IN my kids' rooms (round chambered). However, they all get put away when friends come over. Same thing with my nephew...sweet kid, but he's dumb as a bag of rocks and doesn't know how to follow instructions.

What concerns me about many posters is how they fail to comprehend how quickly a home invasion occurs, how long 1 second is in that context, and how likely they are to get fumble-fisted when the reality of "this is really happening" sets in. This is a major risk, but all risks must be balanced.

My skeet and field shotguns remain unloaded.

Exactly, I wouldn't say my deer rifle is exactly "worthless" just because I don't keep it loaded.

But ultimately it's all about risk management. Most of the people I know have never had a gun of any kind in their house, and never had a problem - and I grew up in NOLA.

And the likelihood of me outdrawing an intruder - who may be all hopped up on stimulants, and while I'm still groggy from just waking up - are pretty slim. I'd rather grab the gun and the phone and take cover outside while calling the cops than kill another human being over a bunch of shite in my house.

You are putting 2 different lines of thinking into the same sentence. I don't keep a round in my HD 870 for safety because shotguns do not have a firepin block. It is easier to rack a shell on a shotgun than rack the slide on my handgun. I do keep my bedside .40 loaded with a round in the chamber because the gun was designed with that in mind.

I find it humorous that this discussion always comes down to extremes. You have one side that say the racking sound does nothing to anyone and the other side that says the racking causes everyone to keel over in fear. The reality is clearly going to be somewhere in the middle.

Does the sound affect someone people, absolutely. Does it affect everyone, surely not. Would I bet my life on a sound protecting me, hell no.

I understand this fully.
In fact I realise that neither me or my wife may even wake up before it may be too late.

I think my .22 revolver in my truck has 5 rounds in it. The rest stay empty. And in cases.

Besides, I thought people on here were just saying to leave the chamber empty and rack one in when there's a boogy man. I dunno. I quit reading a lot of them. The excessive home defense stuff has made this board kind of boring to me.

Dead-on balls accurate.

All guns should be secured to prevent unauthorized access. "Secured" may mean "on your hip," or may mean "locked in a gun safe," or anything in between.

Defensive weapons should be loaded. The methods used to secure these loaded weapons will depend on lifestyle issues (children, psycho girlfriend, drunk friends, etc).

p.s. ....... that was a good disarm in the video.

Not sure if the victim in this video is a badass or a fool.
In his case, badass.

Again, this is a perfect example of "it depends."

20 years ago, I'd a done the exact same thing. Today...not a chance in hell. My reflexes are not as sharp.

These days I probably would have faked hyperventilating, dropped my wallet on the deck and play it from there.

late to this party and didnt read all of the posts, but from my personal experience on this issue i've got a little input.

when a couple thugs were in my house and woke me up, when I racked my .45 they took off. I dont leave one in the chamber, not because i want the racking noise to scare them off, but because of safety.

I've said this before, but I'm glad I didnt have to get in an actual shootout with these guys, may have been 3 or 4 (I only saw 1 as they took off, but know there were at least 2) and as good of a shot as I am and as bad as they probably were the odds still dont stack up.

Moral of the story, I'm glad I had to rack my .45 becuase it did scare off the robbers and I avoided putting myself or my gf in harms way
