So had a boat pull up today and hook on to the platform with spear fisherman and some other fellows in it. The current has been ripping out here and blue water is pushed way out so was curious how they would do. First thing I noticed was while two guys were diving in the other three had lines in the water fishing. Now I dont spear fish but the last thing I would want while diving in the ocean is getting wrapped up in fishing line. I watched for a little bit then went on about my business. Well 10-15 min later I stroll back by and luckily see something a quarter of a mile or so away moving out with current. Finally I realize it is one of the divers and holler to the guys in the boat but they dont pay me much mind, I think they thought I was telling them to leave. So I go down to the bottom deck and tell them again that their diver is way the hell out there, they look but dont see him from the boat but I tell them I am sure it is a diver and they run and go get him.

Long story short another 5 minutes or so and he would have been completely out of sight even from the advantage point of the platform. The guys in the boat had no clue at all, pay attention out there fellas.

Smfh, easy to be complacent, but that just sounds reckless.

Easy solution. Don't leave the boat unless it is sinking, imho.

With the noise from the platform and how far away he was there was no way a whistle would have been heard.

And yes I agree, quite reckless.

Man deep sea diving looks fun as hell but I don't think I could stomach the risk even If I could afford to get out there. If I did do it I'd be one straight laced by the book mofo probably to the point of being annoying. Just so many things that can go wrong. Wonder where it ranks in the most dangerous sport category?

it really isnt as dangerous as some people make it out to be - unless you choose to take risks beyond your capabilities. what is seldom reported with accidents is how experienced the diver is/was or even if he/she was certified.
i know several guys that have spear fished that never went to a SCUBA class. thats just stupid.

I always carried a inflatable safety tube thing, think they called them a "safety sausage", it was normally rolled up, but was about 5 feet long and 5 inches in diameter when you blew it up. Was bright safety green, you held it up over your head vertically, made it much easier for the boat to spot you even when there was some chop. They were required by some of the dive boat operators, like the one that went out to the Flower Gardens reef back then.

I think this is where most people fail at. I'm not going in if the current is crazy. No fish is worth it. Also alot of people under estimate the power of a fish and will chase. Its as dangerous as you make it.

I've never been diving and don't know much about it. But, I have a friend (he doesn't dive) who used to have a 36' Topaz SF, and I went with him when he brought 4 of his clients offshore so they could dive for lobsters.

When we got to the first platform and tied up these guys threw a long rope with a big orange float attached out the back of the boat. I guess that the rope was 200 feet long or so. They said that was their safety rope that if the current blew them off the rig, they could make for the surface and grab that rope.

A side story- when we were at the dock loading up their gear, they had 3 or 4 floor mops they put on the boat. When they were ready to go into the water, 2 of the guys grabbed mops and paired up with a diving partner. I asked them WTF with the mops. They said they would stick the mops in places in the rig structure where lobsters would hide. The lobsters would think that it was an octopus and GTFO out of the hiding place, where they could catch them.

I would love to skydive but I'll be damned if I ever jump out of a boat into 100 plus feet of gulf water

My friends free dive spear fish, I go to be a watcher in the boat. It is some seriously sketchy shite...but its effective. They're civilian Navy divers, but still, watching your friend disappear for two minutes into a dangerous looking rig sucks.

I can't imagine not knowing where one of them is...if I was the diver in the OP I'd find new watchers.

On the other hand, I have a friend who was a certified diving instructor and died while diving recreationally. A momentary lapse can be deadly, so it is really dangerous, it just requires training AND diligence.

Stay safe

I spearfished for 25 years with no issues that I can remember. I would rig hook from the stern making it easy to enter and exit the water. I had only a few but very important rules.

Number 2 was always surface more or less in the center of the rig, that way the current would bring you to the ladder.

A 100, shite they were in a lil over 2000.

Dont remember the name but it had a single 300 Yamaha and a red T-Top and red lettering. It was a dive boat, had tank holders and everything on it.

Is it just me or is it stupid to be fishing with rod and reel with divers underneath you.

As long as people on boat know what to do. When we are diving, we resurface right next to the rig. Once they see us, people reel in to help us out of water. Now it is fun to shoot a fish and tie it to someone's line

Now that just don't make any sense. People can swim. They can't fly.
