I thought it might be entertaining to post some things that we are embarrassed about related to our hunting and fishing abilities.

1. I’ve been duck hunting for 7 years now and can’t call worth’s shite. I always go with more experienced guys and just let them do it. If I go on my own I rarely call. This is Texas prairie hunting so sight is 10x more important than sound.

2. I’ve been fishing and doing outdoor stuff my whole life and I know like 5 knots (square, improved fisherman, uni, thumb, and bowline). I’ve tried learning others but for some reason it just won’t stick.

There are really only three knots you need to know. Square, bowline, and slippery half hitch. Trust me, I was in the Navy

If you can’t tie a knot, tie a lot

After cleaning deer for probably 18 years, I still bust the piss sack about 75% of the time. Even when I’m nowhere near it.

Shooting at my first deer ever I scoped myself in the eye because I was rushing and excited because it was my 3rd year trying to hunt and my first opportunity to pull the trigger. I missed that one, but I killed my first one about an hour later with some dried blood on my face.

I lack the skills it takes to properly sharpen a knife. No matter how many times it’s shown to me, or how long I work at it, I’m an abyssymal failure at putting an edge of any decency on a knife.
The times I got close I soldiered on and somehow managed to f it up again.

So I got that going for me…. ;)

My first attempt at deer hunting was a complete failure and I thought I would never try it again. I first tried back in college. Had never deer hunted in my life, but wanted to try it, so I bought a 30-30. Scoped myself sighting it in.

Then, everytime I went deer hunting that season, I got so bored that I fell asleep. Ended up selling the gun to a buddy after the season and pretty much gave up on deer.

5 or 6 years later, I decided I wanted to try again with a bow...haven't killed one with the bow yet, but I have 3 deer to my name now...and only fall asleep every 5th or 6th hunt...

I know two knots, and no clue what either is called

I suck at throwing a baitcaster.
I can’t do a good feed call.
I clean my squirrels, put them in the freezer and then throw them out after freezer burn. I always tell myself I’ll cook one but rarely do.

You hunt south LA public land, right? It'll humble you for sure.

I quit bow hunting because I'm too lazy to do it.

My biggest outdoor confession is that I really don’t hunt, shoot or fish anymore after 45ish years of devoting all my free time and free cash to doing just that. I’m about to sell my boat, my fishing gear is covered in dust, I haven’t even been to the duck camp in 2 years and haven’t opened my gun cabinet in at least a year

it’s been a good run but now as a middle aged dude I want to travel and go on adventures and just don’t have the passion for it anymore. I still spend lots of time in the wilderness and water but not for the harvest

Still pretty tough hunting. I'd be proud of those 3.

Oh, I am. Even crazier, every one of them was on the ground at less than 50 yards.

I guess it's time for another confession...I'm a very lucky deer hunter. I've never seen a deer while sitting in a tree, and 2 of the 3 deer I killed I basically walked up on...

I started deer hunting in 2019 at 36 yo. Mainly did it because my older son wanted to start. Haven’t killed a deer yet. My then 12 year took one in 19 and I’m working on my 6 year old taking a shot this year one of the times he sits with me.

Now my older son is getting to the point of chasing girls and is more worried about playing football. The 6 year jumps at any chance to go sit with me.

About 15 years ago the company I worked for had a 1200 acre deer lease in South Texas. It was nothing to see 50 - 70 deer every hunt. One particular stand was in a very back corner of the lease and was a pain in the arse to get into. Id drop customers off and then go sit in it to kill a couple hours. One morning the biggest whitetail buck I've ever seen in the wild came out. Well over 180". Just a giant. So big it startled me. I ease my 7 mag out the window, line the giant up in the scope, and pull the trigger. And it goes "click ". Id forgotten to chamber a bullet. Deer obviously hauls arse into the brush and for all I know, into the next county. Told the boss what I'd seen but didn't mention the "click" part. Told him I'd decided it would be better for our #1 customer to shoot him. Sat our #1customer in that stand for the next week and never saw the deer again.

Lmao good cover. I went hunting with a vendor a couple years ago and we were about 200 yards apart. A big ole buck came out and he shot it before I could get my binos down. I was helping him load it and he said he knows he should have let me shoot it but his instincts took over. That's hunting.

Heading to my camp in my buddies boat which is about 6 miles from the launch. We were fired up, jamming to music and crushing beers. Forgot the plug and noticed when we slowed down that water was pooling up on the floor. We freaked out and instead of turning around and hauling arse to drain it out he gunned it to the bank of the bayou. The bayou was too steep and when we stopped the water from our wake swamped the boat. We started throwing all our shite out the boat to keep it from getting wet while the boat gradually sunk to the top rail. Took about an hour but we finally bailed enough to get the bilge working and made it to the camp.

Last year I went duck hunting for the first time in 10 years. First 3 shots I had 2 grays and a spoonbill. The next those hours shot 2.5 boxes of shells and only had those 3 ducks to show for it.
