may affect your resale value

Best reason I have heard to stay away from the gun. However, who the hell buys guns with the intnet of selling them.

This is my rifle. There are many like it, but this one is mine. My rifle is my best friend. It is my life. I must master it as I must master my life. My rifle, without me, is useless. Without my rifle, I am useless. I must fire my rifle true. I must shoot straighter than my enemy who is trying to kill me. I must shoot him before he shoots me. I will... My rifle and myself know that what counts in this war is not the rounds we fire, the noise of our burst, or the smoke we make. We know that it is the hits that count. We will hit... My rifle is human, even as I, because it is my life. Thus, I will learn it as a brother. I will learn its weaknesses, its strength, its parts, its accessories, its sights and its barrel. I will keep my rifle clean and ready, even as I am clean and ready. We will become part of each other. We will... Before God, I swear this creed. My rifle and myself are the defenders of my country. We are the masters of our enemy. We are the saviors of my life. So be it, until victory is America's and there is no enemy, but peace!

I have a ruger LCP in .380 that I like but it is only for hot weather carry. Otherwise I will carry more of a man stopper.

My eyes are on a Glock 21 right now, but I have to build up some funds first, and fishing gear might end up burning through all that money before I decide to buy the gun

I have never sold one and doubt I ever do. Only way would be if the boy has no interest in hunting, then my 30/30 would need to go.

Mwlewis,
Congrats on buying your first handgun! I hope you enjoy it greatly. :-) A few thoughts:

9 mm is a lot cheaper to shoot than anything else and, w/ the right ammo, it is well respected as a self defense round. 40 S&W has more recoil than 9 mm. This could pose a problem for some shooters.

If this is going to primarily be a truck gun, I'd lean more to a full size gun than a smaller one. If you end up cc, you may well want something smaller than a midsize anyway. Very few folks stop buying handguns after their first purchase. :-)

I used to lean toward SA/DA semi-autos, but now I personally prefer DAO or SAO. That's a decision you'll need to make yourself. As far as DAO, I'd look at Kahr and the better striker fired guns, like Glock, S&W, Sig and Springfield. The S&W Shield looks very promising, but I like to stay away from a new model until it has proven it's reliability.

There a lot of very satisfied Taurus customers out there, but w/ like anything manufacturer, there are also some unsatisfied customers. Some handgun makers have an envious, but not perfect, record w/ customer service and quality control. From what I read on the 'net, Taurus seems to be one those gun makers that has more QC problems than some. Of course, no one here knows the exact numbers of QC/CS problems for any gun maker; it's all speculative, based on ones' personal experience and what one reads on the 'net. Although I don't have a Taurus semi-auto, I do have a Taurus snubbie I'm very happy w/.

Try to handle/shoot as many different of the above guns as you can. Glock is a fine gun that is loved by many, but they don't fit my hand well. OTOH, the Springfield XD fit me just well. I never appreciated the love for the 1911 until I handled one; it feels perfect in my hand.

Lastly, don't forget about revolvers. Semi-autos get most of the love and press these days, but a full size revolver in 357 Mag is hard to beat as a truck gun. Plus, you could buy one and stay in your price range.

Rock Island Armory GI Series 1911. Comes in 3in, 4in, or 5in barrels, comes in 9mm or .45acp, accepts the wealth of aftermarket grips, mods, holsters, etc out there for 1911's. Iconic weapon. Has gotten outstanding reviews as a "good value" and "worth what you pay" and are extremely reliable. And sells for like $380.

Rock Island

That would be an awesome route to go to. I'm looking to get one of those to build off of and see what I can do to make it my own, and for about 450 for a 1911 (my favorite weapon ever) its tough to beat. I want to get one just to customize the shite out of.
I've looked everywhere for them and no one in Louisiana seems to have then, the closest dealer I found was in Houston or Montgomery Alabama.

Thanks for all the responses everybody. I just went to a pawn shop and they had a Taurus PT140 (one the ones Im looking at and a pic in the OP) for $315. Not a bad deal at all.

Im gonna look into Sig's and the Ruger SR9C looks interesting. Keep the rec's coming. I've got 2 week until I make my purchase.
