Old boat - when to punt

I have an old 2001 16ft Xpress with a 2-stroke Yamaha 40hp. She's been a good boat, but for the last couple of years, I have constantly been fighting one issue after the other on the engine. The parts aren't expensive, but I am getting tired of the constant "what now?" and just want to be able to hop in the boat and go. I keep the boat up at my place at Lake Rosemound, and it mostly runs there - both due to convenience, but also because I now don't feel comfortable taking it elsewhere... especially down for inshore. At what point do you punt? I doubt I will drop the money for a new boat, but I am considering getting a 4-stroke replacement motor. Does it make sense to put a new motor on a 25 year old hull? I'm assuming that would cost somewhere between 8-10k? (wild guess) Not going to lie, the thought of not doing pre-mix does seem attractive. Thoughts?

I’d repower unless there are issue with the hull.

Not really a "punt" situation. Just comes with the territory with old toys.
If the hull is good- just repower it with a new motor and enjoy the peace of mind.

Those are some of the best 2-stokes you can own, they are also a complete pain in the arse compared to a brand new 4-stroke. Yamaha 40 should run around $7500.
You can get a couple grand for your 2-stoke if it’s in solid shape.

Was kinda “in your boat” 2 years ago. Had a 1995 Stratos with a 1995 Johnson Fastrike, both were a tank BUT they were old and always had me nervous. Now I had an excuse cause boys wanted to fish for high school team and wife gave me the okay to buy new boat so I jumped on the situation and bought brand new.
Zero regrets! Was a little pricey but I had the confidence to travel (new trailer) and fish due to it being new and having a warranty! Knock on wood as of now best decision we’ve made.

The 4 strokes make everything a whole lot simpler. They really are (for the most part) bullet proof as far as design goes and will last forever if you take care of them.

I'm in the same situation as you except I for sure need a new hull as well as a motor. Just can't bring myself to spend the money. I had a chance to buy a Gheenoe Highsider a couple of weeks ago and passed because it isn't exactly what I wanted. Looking for a Classic. I don't know if a new/newer boat would make me fish more but I'm tired of having to work on the damn thing every time I use it. I feel guilty about replacing stuff that still works but I'm also at the point of my life where I no longer want to spend time dealing with stuff that doesn't always work. If the hull is in good shape I wouldn't hesitate to repower if I were you.

only you know if the bull is any good but I just repowered a duck boat we built back in the 80s and it’s got a whole new life now. The new small 4 strokes are amazing. I can’t wait to use it whereas before it was always a drag and a mystery as to whether or not I would even get it started or make it make to the launch.
If you like the boat and it isn’t going to sink repowering is the easy button
