I'm amazed at how many genetic scientists there are a hunting clubs. Every club has one or two and some have three managing the "gene pool" of free range deer herds.

I'm not a deer expert, but I would shoot the 3pt before the no brow 6. The 6 looks very young. But if I wanted/needed the meat, I'd shoot, better yet have a kiddo shoot, either or both.

If the goal is to just reduce numbers, both bucks are good candidates to be shot.

we have 12 days left of youth hunting before rifle opens for adults...the only problem is these 2 deer are in the woods where we have only a climbing stand hung.

would love to have either of these be a first deer for a kid. we have an unused 2 man ladder we could put in the spot for just such a thing.

we'll se if we can't get that done on Wednesday.

That deer is nowhere close to 1.5 years old.

We shoot the ones with no brows as our cull buck.. we are allowed 1 "trophy" and 1 cull. We try to let the young 8s and 10s walk..

I definitely wouldn't put a kid in that climbing stand to try and kill one of those deer. Not because the kid couldn't handle it, but if you are only getting midnight pictures of them what makes you think they are just going to be in that spot during daylight hours just because you take a kid?

So when I asked about this one, my buddy that is managing the lease said this is a 140-150# 1-1/2 y.o. with his first rack and to let him walk

Just my thoughts if the deer is in Louisiana

1. A 1.5 year old buck is usually around 120 pounds, not 150

2. This deer looks at least 185pounds and 3.5 years or older to me at least

Shoot him. Let another buck take his place. Hopefully the new buck will have better genetics

Wrong about the age. I’d kill him too.

Is your buddy the self appointed manager? Can he be replaced? What are the consequences of not listening to him?
There are not many places south of the mason dixon that are going to have deer that heavy at 1.5yr!!
Now will that deer turn into a trophy maybe not but that’s not yearling.

Thats my opinion as well...2.5-3yr probably

Not to mention we are in the piney woods just outside of Waynesboro, Ms but we feed and plant year round and have many mineral sites

One advantage we have though is we back up to about 3000 acres of National forest that is landlocked and not usable by the public.

So we always have new rack deer we've never seen before showing up year to year

You could easily kill 50+ deer a year on 1100 acres and it would just be replenished by other deer moving in

Blows my mind, especially those 200 acre pine tree lease biologists.

Yeah he’s already reproduced. Spikes are getting in on the action their first year.

I was always under the impression that the dominant/larger bucks kept that from happening. Heard they would kill any small buck that even tried if given the opportunity.

I'm sure on occasion a spike gets a little bit.

But consensus is the mature bucks keep the hot does on lock down so to speak.

Im no expert...that is why we are having this conversation

No. There isn’t enough mature bucks. Mature bucks can only breed so many does, and they they may spends a few days with a single doe.

I’m not an expert either but there are tons of info you can read on and gain a ton of knowledge. Here’s a quick article that sheds some light LINK /

Read every post you can on their website as well as anything from Mississippi state university’s deer university website.

Bucks only carry 1/2 the genes. I would let it grow and see what happens.

That is a young buck. No way I would take him out unless it's high fence and VERY well managed for genetics (does as well as bucks)

6 points get big too, there’s nothing wrong with a big 6. You aren’t really going to change genetics and if you keep a healthy herd (meaning you shoot does and done shoot every buck you see), those genes aren’t going to run rampant through the lease.
