On almost every property, you have a shortage of mature bucks. I’d rather have mature six points than few mature bucks at all. Instead of looking for an excuse to kill a buck (cull), look for an excuse to give them another year. Instead of thinking about taking genes out of the herd, take a mouth out of the herd. Has the buck become all he can be?
Here are some management style bucks that we’ve killed over the years.

Why were some of them listed by weight and others by age?

I just went with what I could recall from those deer. If I could remember the age, I put it down.
I do think that weight is a good thing to look at when field Judging age. In most parts of the Southeast, a 200 lb buck is at least 3.5 years old. Of course, pre-rut and post-rut make a difference.

I hunt small family property (300 acres) and I’m the only one hunting it.I’ve killed about 50 bucks over the years and only 1 was 31/2 years, rest have been 2 1/2 and a few 1 1/2 years old.
Every year I get pictures of a nice mature bucks but it’s always at night and never see them in daytime nor get day pictures.
Right now I have an 8 point that is easily 4 1/2 hanging around my house,I have pictures of him on edge of my front yard and at a feeder behind my house, but all the pictures are at night. Based on my past experience,I’ll never see him. It’s very frustrating.
I know what some are going to say, don’t shoot 2 1/2 yo bucks.I’ve let a lot of nice bucks walk but it doesn’t seem to matter. For example,a few years ago I had an exceptional year,I saw 14 bucks and only killed 2, I passed a nice 9 pt and several 8’s.But it doesn’t seem to matter, next year I saw 10 bucks but it was still only 1 1/2 and 2 1/2 year olds.Killed 2 of them..
Part of my strategy is I don’t shoot does, neighbors around me do so I feel I’m giving them a sanctuary which to attract bucks.
I guess my problem is I have relatively small property and some of the neighbors hunt pretty hard so once bucks reach 3 1/2 they go nocturnal.

Maybe only at feeders in the daytime, but they don't lay down before daylight and get up after dark for an entire season.

Not telling you anything you probably don’t know, but 300 acres isn’t going to support multiple mature bucks 24/7/365. Sounds to me like the mature deer are coming to visit regularly but not necessarily living on your property. If you own it, try to increase habitat diversity by cutting/thinning as you can and try to establish no pressure areas.

Your 300 acres only hunted by you can be a sanctuary for the surrounding area. Pay strict attention to the wind and hunt the property from the outside in.
The mature bucks will show, sooner or later. Probably during the rut. If I have a good idea where a mature buck is living, I try to kill him right before the rut kicks off. Daytime activity will increase then, but he’ll still be using his home range.

Yup. I call em daywalkers. Happens for about 5-7 days when they start cruising.

How many cameras are you running on that property? Where are they located Typically we have 1-2 for every 50 acers or so we are hunting.
Old bucks don’t get old by walking around feeding durning daylight when hunters are in the woods. And mature bucks even without pressure avoid those places that typically have cameras (feed/foodplots)
Stick a few cameras on some travel corridors or transition zone pinch points, set them to video and see where the deer is coming from going to.
He’s probably only moving in daylight in places you can’t kill him now until the rut kicks in then you have a 7-10 day window that he will walk in front of a train during daylight while a marching band is playing.

Is this a new strategy? If it isn’t then why stick to your same old strategy expecting different results?

I couldn’t help very much without seeing the property and surrounding areas.

My first opinion is to talk to the neighbors to see what they are killing and if “y’all” could try to let them get older. If your neighbors are only concerned with shooting horns then you have to do the same on that small of a property. That is the easiest of all.

Second is to turn your property into a deer haven. That means thinning timber. Let sunlight down to the grown and let natural browse take over. Be prepared to keep it that way, and to spend some money. Much harder and very expensive.

Cameras - I have 6,3 are on feeders,2 are on high line that runs through the property that have regular crossings and I have a cellular camera on road in front of my house to monitor vehicles on my road.First picture I actually got of the mature 8 was walking down the road,my wife saw him one night standing by our mailbox.I checked my cameras this afternoon and had a picture of him crossing the high line at the western edge of our property. Also got another picture of him at the feeder behind the house. So he’s moving around, just at night.
I have about 75 acres of pine timber that has been thinned in the past and burned couple years ago,the understory is so thick I can’t walk through it.Beauty berry bushes, some blackberry, lots greenbriers and privet on the edges.I have firebreaks running through that I keep bushhogged, lots of blackberries grow along edges.
My cousin(doesn’t hunt) owns about 40 acres that the high line runs through,it needs to be thinned but is a lot of privet and beauty berry bushes growing so It’s somewhat thick.
My neighbor has 75 acres surrounded by my family property, his property is mostly thick mixed oak and pine.He had a stroke few years ago so he’s not doing much hunting,He never killed but maybe 1 buck a year because he owned other properties.

There is couple hundred acres that borders my land that is partly national forest and partly privately owned that is hunted hard. One guy I know over there let’s people hunt on his property if they share the meat, they killed 4 does on his land last year and he only has a few acres.
As I said I don’t shoot does because I feel they attract bucks.I’ not saying I won’t ever.I went through a bad 5 years where I was overrun with wild hogs and my deer population was very slim. The hogs have been gone a couple of years and the deer numbers are picking up.I’ve seen and gotten pictures this year of more does than I,ve ever had. They all look healthy and have 1-2 yearlings with them.If the deer herd keeps growing and the hogs stay away I may start shooting an occasional one.

I hunt a similar size property and it took us a while to get to shooting consistent 3.5+ bucks. Couple of questions/observations based on your post.

1) how are you aging the bucks? We kill small antlered deer that are old. Maybe you are killing older bucks than you think?

2) 50 bucks by yourself seems like a lot. How many do you average a year?

3) It is hard to gauge movement on a property with only 1 person hunting. Are you hunting food plots and the high line only? We typically kill our bucks where we can only see 30-50 yards in thicker areas.

4) We had too many does and aggressively took 10-15 does over a decade off 300ish acres. It wasn’t until the population was lower that we started seeing more mature bucks. We also religiously passed on everything and there was 3-4 years where we didn’t kill a buck.

5) do you know when the rut is at your place? We consistently kill our bucks within a 2 week period leading up to the first chasing. We shoot more bucks cruising before chasing starts. Took us a while to figure out the exact timing since Louisiana ruts are so variable.

Between the 7 of us members we probably have 30 cameras out on our 1100 acres

No one else has any 6pts or larger bucks with no brow tines on camera.

Im guessing that is why the decision was made to take him out before he breeds or breeds again

Based on this information, I wouldn't even think twice about getting rid of this deer.

ABucks:
1) Up until last 3-4 years I cut the jawbone out of virtually every deer I killed and compared it to a chart I have. I feel like I’m a pretty good judge of age now.
I also weigh every deer I kill.Interestingly,as many deer as I’ve weighed I still tend to over estimate weights by about 10 lbs. or so.

2) I killed my first deer here in 1991 but I was always in a club, went to Texas for a few years.I only hunted here occasionally so I averaged less than 2 /year.
2007 I quit the club I was in and started hunting my property exclusively. In 14 years I’ve killed 30 so avg.2.1 /year.I’ve actually passed a lot of bucks.First year I retired(2010) I saw 14 and only killed 2.I passed a 9 pt. and 2-3 8 pts. hoping they would come back bigger the next year.

3)The 2 spots I hunt the most are the high line,I have a box,I can see 300 yds one way and 200 yds the other way.I have a gravity feeder on the high line 100 yds away on 300 yd.stretch.
My best spot I have a box with 4 lanes radiating out like spokes,2 center lanes are 300 yds ,I have a feeder on 1.My rationale for that is to attract does which brings bucks around and it has actually worked,I’ve killed 20 there.
My other 2 spots are feeders with food plots,I only hunt them with East winds because I can’t hunt my other 2 spots with E wind.
I have 5 cameras out plus a cellular camera on road in front of my yard.

4) Does, I might need to shoot 1 or 2.I’ve seen more this year than I ever have, personally and on cameras.Best I can tell,I have 8 does and 12 yrlgs.
There is 1 big old doe I almost shot, she probably weighs 135 lbs. and has 2 yrlgs.Besides the meat I’d like to check her jawbone and see how old she is.

5) Rut-Typically around No 15th plus or minus a week.Since I retired I hunt virtually everyday except Sunday last week of October through Thanksgiving,After that bucks go completely nocturnal. Anyway I don’t miss the rut.
I could start another whole argument about the timing of rut.For years before I retired I hunted hardest following the full moon called the Hunter’s Moon,I read about it in Dr.James Kroll’s book and found it to be very accurate way to time the rut, most years..David Moreland’s Rut Report in Louisiana Sportsman magazine is obviously based on Dr. Kroll’s data but he never mentions the moon.It wasn’t at all accurate this year though.

Reflecting on all this I have to be honest, while I’d like to kill more mature bucks,I’m not really putting in the effort to do so. Every year I get pictures of a monster buck I’d like to have on the wall but I’m not really hunting the right spots to do so unless I just get very lucky.
Up until I was 65 I hunted exclusively out of climbers, now I’m spoiled to box stands and seeing a long way.
Then,I have the old timer mindset that I just don’t like to shoot does. The club I was in wanted each member to shoot 3 does a year,I did it but I really didn’t like to.I liked the meat but I didn’t have any antlers for a souvenir.
All in all,I can’t really complain.I have 300 acres to hunt where I want and when I want.Hunting clubs always seemed to end up with some of the members squabbling, that’s one reason I got out of the club I was in.

Sounds like you are living the dream and have a nice place. My only suggestion which you mentioned would be change up where you hunt. The mature bucks pattern us better than we pattern them.

Good luck with peak of the rut approaching.

Agree. Sounds like a great setup. The only thing I would add to it is a turkey chair and a grunt call. Get right to cover and catch him on the edge of heavy cover.
