Big fisherman, have been for years. Want to try to take up deer hunting this year. Got a place to hunt and all that stuff.

I was wondering about recommendations for a entry level rifle. Buddy of mine told me remington 700. Just figured I could get some good answers on the Outdoor Board.

Thanks

Any major brand bolt action rifle will work. Make sure you save some money to use on a good scope too. I suggest either a .270, .30-06, or a .308 for your first deer rifle.

Spot on here. Can't go wrong with rem 700. Just don't get the 770. Ruger American seems like a good gun for the price as well.

Yep. Start with a 270 or 30-06. Next rifle you can go up or down to change it up.

You came to the right place...lots of gun fanatics and they're very knowledgeable.

IMHO, your buddy is right, I'd go with Rem. 700 .30-06.

Everything you'll need in just about any situation (and a little more).

i feel obliged to add my $.02 for a fellow Thunder Chicken fan.

a Remmy 700 chambered for 30-06 is the way to go. you'll never need anything else, but once you have a rifle you'll want another...and another...and another...(see the developing pattern?)

PS-don't go cheap on the glass. if you can't see it, you can't shoot it. even a custom built Jarrett rifle is useless at dusk with a crappy scope.
