7mm08 is your answer. It will handle all of your requirements. My perfect rifle search stopped when I acquired one. Mine is a rem 700 with a bell and Carl stock and a timney trigger.

Ammo stocks on shelves have gotten better but still aren’t back to where they were 4 years ago. The internet is a wonderful thing but it’s nice to go walk through a store like academy and grab an extra box of bullets and a bag or two of plastic worms just because you’re already there, 28 nosler will never get to the level 7 mag will.

As someone who shoots a 7 mag as my primary deer rifle, it is way over kill for where I hunt. I bought it as a 20yo who hunted with a .243 up until that point, purely over compensating, 15 years later it’s a comfort and confidence deal

Help a brotha’ out. Where are you finding rounds? Or are you reloading?
TIA

Federal

ETA: I haven’t bought 7 mag bullets in years, but I bought 4 boxes of .30-06 a week ago.

If I’m buying a gun for elk hunting I’m buying a separate gun for deer hunting.

I’m kind of a minimum .300 win mag for elk. Yes there are a lot of calibers that will kill one, but I want to be sure that if I make a good shot it’s going down.

For deer, the .308 is probably the best caliber made for deer hunting in the south. A .308 with a 16 or 18” barrel is the perfect southern deer hunting gun.

Also another poster replied the 7mm Mag, if I'm going that route why not the 28 Nos? It's pretty much better in every catageory, minus availability.

Spoken like someone who had never fired a 28 nosler. The 7 mag is just slightly overbored, with the 28 nosler you can see little pieces of your barrel leaving the end on every $3 shot.

I don’t remember the rifle model because I bought it from a buddy on a whim. It’s a 16 inch Christensen Arms .308 with Sitka pattern stock. Zeiss V6 scope and Primal can on it.

7mm rem mag is as easy to find as 308, 270,and 30-06.

I don't buy ammo. I handload but if you can't find bullets for 7MM REM MAG, you aren't even looking.

I’ve been shooting a .300wsm for about 10 years now. Sako 85. I don’t see myself shooting anything else. My 13 year old son shot a doe at 381 yds yesterday. She didn’t make it 5 yds.

I have a 270 WSM that is basically a boat anchor because you can’t find ammo unless you pay an arm and a leg for it! For that reason I bought a Savage 308 and love it. Stick with the old reliable calibers! 30-06, 308, you’ll always be able to fine them.

I just started shooting a 7mm 08 that my dad bought me for Christmas last yr. Thing is an absolute tack driver, little recoil, and has dropped two deer where they stood. I won’t go back to anything else, unless I decide to shoot my grandpas lever action 30-30 some day.

Yea, if I’m spending significant time and money on an elk hunt, I want to bring a gun that’s going to give me the best opportunity to take an ethical shot.

Many elk have been taken with a .243, but there are much better tools out there.

If you want one gun to cover both deer and elk, I would go on the heavier side. 7mag, .300 mag, 30-06, .308 at the lightest.

I’d get this beautiful Marlin in 45-70.
