Ok I had a few Budget ARs S&W and one colt AR before the tragic boating accident. Thinking about spending 1000 to 1300 for a new addition. Looks like Springfield Saint Sig M400 IWI and Maybe a Stag Arms would be in my budget. What the boards recommendation for a new AR IN that price range just for the gun. I'll add all the extras as I go thanks in advance for the advice.

Stag if you need a lefty, otherwise I think their prices have risen too much for what you get.

Colt is not a bad option in that price range if you want to go there again.

Lots of guns you use to be able to pick up for $1k-$1.5k are now $2k guns... You use to be able to get an LMT patrol in that price range all day long, now it looks like you need $2k to get one.

What features are you looking for?

I like the looks of this one but never shot it. Has good reviews from what I’ve seen.

Feature wise looking for Freefloat mlok Handguard mid gas bloack pinned. OPTICS ready crome lined barrel and decent trigger. I love the colt. But to be honest the S&W Sports 2 are just as good. I've shot easily 2000 rounds through them. Just thinking about something different.

No they aren't and I have sold hundreds of sports. Sure they are decent for the money but they simply are not on the same level as Colt. Some of the M&P line is up there, I have one of the M&P rifles because it was a smoking deal for a mid length gun that was configured 95% of the way of my LMT so I set it up as a back up almost identical.

To be fair modern Colt isn't on par with Colt just a few years ago and I understand with going with another brand, but for $1k they are a solid choice.

Sound like you will be in a Stag to get all those features. There is really nothing wrong with them, I just have a hard time paying over $1k for one when they were like $100 more than a sport not that long ago. They usually have a lot of solid features and are well thought out. IME they don't hold value like a 6920 or similar.

Good features though, chrome lined mid length is where I like to start for 16" AR's.

Colts are overpriced POS. I bought a new 6951 a few years ago. First thing I noticed tge birdcage flash hider wasn’t even hand tight. The tool marks on the lower looked like a woodpecker with a metal beak went to town. Finally the castlenut on the gun was so loose the barrel wobbled. Three things that should have never made it past QC.

You can build a pretty badass AR for $1300-$1400. I like taking the best parts from different companies and putting mine together. I realize not everyone wants to do it.

If I had to buy one in that price range I get a BCM Recce. You can get for around $1400.

For $1400 you can almost buy and FN or BCM or Daniel Defense (when you catch a hell of a deal).

For less than $1400 you can also build a Centurion, which is what I'd do.

I tend to agree that Colt has been passed up on the AR market. When they were the standard bearer for LE and military rifles they had good QC and were considered the standard for a reason. I believe FN has moved into the spot of being the standard issue M16/M4 rifle for the military (could be wrong though).

There are a ton of options out there today that will outperform a modern Colt. I wouldn't have said this same statement 10-15 years ago though.

FN has some solid guns. I am not a BCM fan. I have seen colts with some cosmetic flaws but I have never seen one not assembled properly, doesn’t mean it didn’t happen. I just sold plenty and never had issues like that. The parts are milspec which is better than a lot of brands today.

Aero Precision may fit your needs.

Hard to pass up IWI as well.

There is a reason an AR company went bankrupt in one of the biggest AR buying binges in history.

It had nothing to do with the gun business and everything to do with the leadership. They purchased Colt, leveraged the company to the MAX but instead of investing the money in Colt they paid themselves the money. They still had record sales but were overleveraged and it was unsustainable. The group that bought them didn't care because they just wanted the easy fast big payday and didn't care about the brand.

So if you have a S&W Sporter 2, how do you improve it? I've already done trigger, stock, grips,

When had Colt had anything new come out?

Everything that you said is true but all they had to do was have anything innovative in the market. Colt hasn’t introduced a new gun in 50+ yrs.

Unless you are just adverse to a build, I would build your own and make it as you want it from the ground up.

Of the brands you mentioned, I’d go Sig.

I was going to come on and say that my Colt has been nothing but flawless, but it is a few years old now.

I've owned a S&W M&P Sport 2 for over 10 years now and replaced the following parts:
-Geissele SSA-E trigger
-Magpul grip
-15" M-lok rail with the full picatinny rail on top (no name brand that I paid $39)
-Magpul MOE Carbine butt stock, mil spec
-Surefire Warcomp Flash hider for the Surefire 556 suppressor
-Gas block
-AFG forward grip
