Is this really something that far fetched?

Stray dogs without collars on the deer lease, stray dogs chasing cows in the pasture, dogs that show aggression to pets, and dogs that show aggression towards humans.....they take a ride. I hate doing it but I will never be terrorized or have to structure my life hiding from a POS animal.

There's a time and place for aggressive dogs, I grew up with them, usually locked onto a pigs ear in 6" of mud. Not in a cul de sac with someone's wife screaming while fluffy gets mauled.

I get the sentiment, but I live in a suburban neighborhood. Had we tired that, I would be in the pokey for discharge of a firearm within the city limits.

No worries. Sometimes I wish I did. Have an Upvote.

But if you notice this from the City code...

quote:

ATTACKING ANIMALS:
A. Attacking Animals: It shall be unlawful for the owner or person having charge, care, custody or control of any animal to allow such animal to attack, chase or worry any person, any domestic animal having a commercial value, or any species of hoofed protected wildlife, or to attack domestic fowl. "Worry", as used in this section, shall mean to harass by tearing, biting or shaking with the teeth.
B. Owner Liability: The owner or person charged with responsibility for an animal which attacks, chases or worries any person or animal as provided in subsection A of this section shall be strictly liable for a violation of this section, and shall be subject to prosecution and liable in damages to any person injured or to the owner of any animal(s) injured or destroyed thereby.
C. Defenses: The following shall be considered in mitigating the penalties or damages or dismissing any charge hereunder:
1. The animal was properly confined on the premises; or
2. The animal was deliberately or maliciously provoked.
D. Animals May Be Killed: Any person may kill an animal while it is committing any of the acts specified in subsection A of this section or while such animal is being pursued thereafter.

So, in the heat of the moment, you might be able to use such a tool to protect yourself. Utah is generally pretty pro self defense in these situations. But, just like the Kyle Rittenhouse situation, you never know how law enforcement is going to view things and what they'll ultimately do. If everyone behaves properly, nobody ever has to find out (and there in lies the problem....)

As a side note, I'm glad this has been a relatively civil, rational discussion. I appreciate it.

He needs his dog either on a leash or contained in his yard somehow.

Just got back from Animal Control. Our dog is now legal in the eyes of the city. It cost me a whopping $6.

The animal control folks were great. They wouldn't even let me pay the late fee as I requested. I had a conversation about what happened over the weekend. I spoke in generalities and told them how I intended to handle it. I'm going to ask the neighbor to license his dog with them, and keep Charlie on a leash if he's in the front yard. I'm not asking for that much, and it's City code anyway. They seemed very comfortable with the approach. The did not pressure me for his info or more specifics. They said, "It's always best when neighbors handle it among themselves." I agree with that. I have no ill will against them as neighbors, or the dog for that matter. They made a mistake, and that can happen to anyone. Lord knows I've made the my own mistakes with animals as well. We are all lucky that nothing more serous happened. Hopefully this is a wakeup call for all of us.

Thanks again to everyone for their thoughts and advice. It's been very helpful to me mentally working through everything.

I can't tell from the video and you say this, did the dog try and actually bite/ attack your dog or was it just showing physical aggression? Dogs play fight all the time is what I'm saying or show aggression/ dominance to each other but don't intend to actually hurt the other.

If the pit was trying to bite/ hurt then I'd absolutely report it officially. Given that, if your dog doesn't have any physical indications I'm not sure the video is proof of that.

The reason why you should report it is because owner's of dogs that act this way will often not do any thing until they are forced. If you don't report it the same thing may happen again and not be reported, until its too late and someone/ some dog is seriously hurt.

Thank, it means alot. I try to have an even keel as much as I can.

The neighborhood kids are taking a lunch break and playing in our back yard as I type this. This is exactly why I wanted to tread lightly with regards to the situation from the beginning.

Louisiana has thousands of personal injury lawyers, say the word and the OB will ship a train car load of them north to make it right.

It bit him for sure. If you listen closely to the audio, you can hear our dog yelp. (kind of hard to hear it over my wife tho. )

BTW, what's going on with your neighbors pants? What kind of warm up pants fall down when you run?

Friendly Internet advice:

I wouldn’t post a personal one drive link to a video identifying who you are and where you live on a public message board.

I would like to think that if I were in your situation, I would be sure to be with the wife the next few times she walked our dog, and I would be carrying a baseball bat. Seeing that dog coming from that far away, I feel like I could make solid contact before it gets to me or my pup.

She normally carries pepper spray with her when she walks. But it was so warm on Sat, she didn't wear her big coat (where it's been most of the winter)

Outside of a gun (for our kid walking the dog) what’s best defense to carry around to deal with pits and other aggressive dogs especially when our dog may not initially back down. Even at nearly 90 pounds Our 10 month old dog is still more puppy than dog and would have no chance dealing with a pit but would think he could at first especially to protect family and is quite strong on a leash.

We also had a recent neighborhood group post about a pit getting loose and about to attack another dog being walked on a leash before the pit owner ran out and tackled the pit. Parent was pushing a child in a stroller while walking dog when pit came after them. Possibly the same pit later chased a woman and her dog into another neighbor’s garage forcing them to close door and call her husband to come get them, so if same the pit is getting out and owner not always there.

Kind of feel some things will piss off pits more than scare them off, and on top of danger to whoever is walking our dog of getting caught between the dogs I feel trying to drag our dog off on leash is setting him up to be finished off by loose pit who will just be able to keep coming after our dog.

Maybe I need one solution for regular dogs that make up 99% of ones around us that can still get loose at times and just want them to back off and another for the 1% that end up hurting or killing the other dogs if not tackled by owner or put down first (aka pits).

A baseball bat should do the trick

Best thing if you have it handy (Like in your yard and could get to it) is a fire extinguisher.

If walking:

Carry a club and pepper spray. Hit the flank, side and back legs to make the dog realize it’s getting attacked and it will let go. Or jam the stick sideways in their mouth.

Pepper spray is very effective against dogs. Sabre is a good brand. This one is designed for runners.

Or this model for dogs.

Or sonic sound deterrents like this one. Or this one.

If the aggressive dog has a collar, the best thing is to choke his arse. You can put on a "choke hold" by taking the collar, lifting it up, then twisting it to the left or right as you're pulling it backwards.

This situation sucks. I have had some dogs come up on my little one. Nothing bad yet. But it scares the shite out of me. I'd kill 'em if they went after him like that and let the chips fall where they may.

But testosterone aside, I guess talking to the neighbor as mentioned. He's got a huge arse liability brewing, not to mention neighborly relations. Hopefully he cares, but if he doesn't, it's gonna get nasty and you gotta do what you gotta do. Worst thing in the world is to have your dog or child killed because of this negligence.
