I took about a 50 yard neck shot on a doe with a .270 years ago. As I squeezed the trigger, a dog off in the distance started barking. She jerked her neck just as I shot. I trailed blood in water for a ways and even saw her one time with her head down awkwardly, but no chance for a follow up shot. I never did find her. A neck shot can be great, but not always.

Behind the shoulder through the vitals is the way to go. Bigger target, more margin for error, and done right does not ruin meat.

I have seen deer killed with old neck wounds a few times. I have seen many tracked and lost after a neck shot was attempted.

I tried one last year because I didnt want to track in a briar filled cutover......clean miss. Yes, my mistake. But it easily couldve been a wounded animal, all to save me some scratches.

I shot a 7 this weekend, went back to behind the shoulder, even if you get too far forward you probably lose a few pounds of ground meat.

If she kicked her hind legs, I'd say you knicked her slightly. You just don't have a lot of wiggle room there, just look at those pictures of T4 if you need an example, if that shot was in his chest he'd be dead.

I've hit two deer in the neck just past the shoulders as I was aiming for behind the shoulders and hit 4-6 inches off. Both dropped in their tracks, one actually literally fell backwards.

Never shot a deer in the neck. Always go for behind the shoulder.

Neck shots are only for thunder chickens

I neck shot a 9 point with a .270 shot a bit high and just cut muscle hit no bone. Deer dropped and I went out to retrieve them the sob jumped up and started plowing off. Shot it with my pistol twice more before it finally died.

Lesson if you don’t hit bone it isn’t drt with a neck shot

If you don't want to track a deer, and you want to minimize meat loss, try this shot. The spine is widest and lowest right in front of the chest cavity. Aim 2/3 of the way up straight above the front leg. There is less room for error with this shot and it works, even from the front and quartering you also. The deer will not get out of your sight.

Just about every deer I've shot low or behind the shoulder, although the heart may be demolished and blood pours, has run.

I don’t like attempting that shot. There’s a lot of no mans land up there.
