I thought this was pretty interesting.
Not trying to advocate any cartridge, just providing info.
This is just from Christensen Arms Bolt action rifles and what they sold.
The 300prc is pretty striking.

Buddy of mine dating a girl who gave him her ex husbands Christensen 300 PRC. She thought it was just a regular hunting rifle.

Do they have stats from previous years? Would be curious to see trends.

Smart business move by CA, find out the most popular selling cartridge and chamber lots of rifles. Follow the public demand. Same thing happened in the mid-2000's when Hornady released the 17HMR. Rifle manufacturers started advertising the 17 rimfire craze and every Tom, Dick, and Harry bought one ... myself included.
IMO, the 6.5CM is the current "flavor of the month". Sales and hype are directly associated with PRS competition (long range shooting) and the parent case being on a short action platform. Kids, women, and recoil sensitive people can shoot the CM with ease all day long. Lots of factory ammo on store shelves, and the cartridge is inherently accurate (i.e. 17HMR). I personally don't own a CM since I built a custom 6.5x47Lapua when it was the "flavor of the month" in 2013. Various 6.5 cartridges pictured below

Are they still giving out free pony tail holders with the 6.5 creedmores?

The Cripplemore craze is fun to watch.

Cripplemore

Smoking the .308 in sales is incredible. Advertising works

Hes not alone. I hate it with a passion. Its success is remarkable

Love my Mesa in 6.5 creedmoor. Best shooting rifle I have ever owned. Nothing ran more than 30 yards. Shot placement is better than trying to blow a deer up

The hate of the cartridge is that there was absolutely nothing new about its performance, but marketing has turned millennials into 6.5 zombies.
If I had to guess how it got the cripplemoore name? Probably people watching and reading about its long range target abilities so they think they can buy one and proceed to start shooting deer and elk at 600 yards.

I went off into the depths of it in another thread and dont care to repeat all of it, but because it is a marketing success. That exact performance has been available for over a century in the 6.5x55

Readily available ammo, good performance, huge selection of rifles...you don't have to be a zombie to like all of that. I don't own one and I probably never will but it's pretty easy to see the appeal. Even if it's popularity is because of marketing.
