Miter Saws: Sliding vs Non-sliding / What should I know?

Looking to buy. Work gave me a $125 Amazon gift card for Christmas. Looking to get this Metabo for $99. Lowe’s has it for $149. Looked at it and it felt pretty durable. Then I saw the sliding versions and was more impressed with those. Is it a gimmick?
FYI, I’m no carpenter or anything. This will be used for home projects.
Metabo HPT C10FCGS Compound Miter Saw, 10-Inch, Single Bevel, 15-Amp Motor, 0-52° Miter Angle Range, 0-45° Bevel Range, Large Table, 10" 24T TCT Miter Saw Blade

I have that exact one. Good beginner saw. I’ve kinda outgrown mine. Only have issues cutting base or crown larger than 5”. And I’m a weekend warrior. Wanna upgrade to a 12”

I did trim/finish carpentry for years and always with a DeWalt DW716 12" compound miter saw. Tried 12" slider saws and for really precise work they simply don't do as well plus they need a bit more space to setup. I have 10" single bevel miter saw, also a DeWalt and better for smaller work and shoe mold. Big dimensional lumber and shelving boards I've always used a circular saw anyway. A 10" slider would probably be the most useful for you as the extra width in cutting capacity is probably what you'll need more than fitting stain grade cabinet crown.

I wish I had a sliding miter saw. Maddening when you come across something that is just a little too wide for my traditional miter.

You’ll always wish you had bigger/slider.
The non-slider is usually plenty for straight cuts, but when you start cutting 45s or other angles, that non-sliding 10” starts to get really limited.

I bought the 12” Admiral slider at Harbor Freight. The sliding feature is super nice.

Sliding is worth it imo. Non sliding is limited.

Go slider and don’t look back. If you don’t have a slider you will find there are many times you will have a piece of wood that needs that little extra to cut it.

Sliders are awesome, but I have a regular miter saw and make due just fine.

I have a 19 year old compound Delta 12" non slider that's a beast and I curse it every time I need to take it somewhere.
It's nice to have the extra cutting depth, but I'd say 99.5% of the time a 7.25" or 10" slider would do the trick.

Get a sliding compound miter saw. And if you can the 12" version. They are not gimmicks. A miter saw only does a couple things well. A SCMS does a whole lot more.

Basic work around home the sliding 10” will be sufficient. I have the dewalt sliding 10” and can cut most anything. If you’re going non sliding route definitely go 12”.

I've had a porter cable 12" non slide with laser for over a decade and it still works great, although on some straight cuts i do have to lift the front up to finish the cut. . I've been eyeing the Dewalt 7 1/4" battery powered slider. Has anyone had experience with that one?

I bought a craftsman slider years ago for home projects. My only complaint with it (and this may be for all sliders) is that it doesn't have a front stop available for crown molding. Just something to think about if you plan on cutting crown molding with it. I picked up a miter box for those cuts.

it really depends on what you're cutting, but a 10" non-slider wont even cut an 8" board cross ways.
i have a sliding saw and love it, just wish it was dual bevel

Batteries have come a long way, but I'd be leery of that. Cutting places a heavy, sustained load on a battery. I bought the little 4.5" dewalt 20v circular saw for working on my dock, and it's handy and keeps me from having 110v around water, but it's hell on batteries.
If you just absolutely need it to be portable I'm sure it's a good saw, but if you have access to A/C I'd use it for something like that.

About like 4x4 truck.. not really necessary until you need it then it’s worth every penny

I'm waiting for them to put a brushless motor in this saw. Unless you're currently a Dewalt 20V user, the Kobalt equivalent cuts a wider board and has a brushless motor for the same money.

Then that’ll probably work.
I gutted and refinished an entire house, moved walls, etc with a 12” compound and table saw. But you’re the only one who knows what you’ll probably need to cut.
