There are lots of tales (and pics) of catching bill-less marlin. I don't doubt that some die, but not all

If the prop would have hit fish 3' back it would have been DQ'd on the spot. And no cameras is fishy is frick.

That's exactly what I think happened.

I fool with the boats some but I've never been billfishing. How does a big marlin like that end up in the wheels? Do the captains accidentally back down on top of the fish or something? Seems like they'd be in mega "don't frick up" mode once it started getting close to the boat and if anything clutched ahead to keep it behind them.

someone else will have to chime in with specifics but JJ would smoke the wahoo every year and take home a nice paycheck so they changed the rules requiring you to enter more than 1 category someone feel free to correct me if I am wrong

That is true, but there was more I think.

Don't know the guy at all, but know some people who do. Plus there was a thread on THT a while back.

Supposedly he then entered 2 categories, then they cancelled the second category after he entered and sent him home.
I'm sure he felt singled out ( probably with good reason), and after that I'd sure as hell blast them for every little rules violation I saw...

But waves and a live fish make it unpredictable. Alot has to go right among angler, mate and captain to land a big fish.

Interesting. So this looks to be much deeper than this particular tournament with the mutilated bill.

I figured they'd be about 7/8 dead by the time they got wore down enough to actually get them to the boat but like I said I've never done it. I can see how it COULD happen, but that fish doesn't look like he got hit by the wheel to me. Seems like it'd be tough to cut the bill off that close and not hack the rest of his head up to hell and back.

It wouldn't be a fishing tournament if there was no drama about the weigh-in........

I don't even offshore fish that often, but this is the best Scooby Doo mystery of the year so far.

I think it's pretty clear the fish got whacked by the props. Not much else can take off the bill. I would think a DQ would be just about automatic with a fish like that. JJ has a legitimate gripe IMO, as do the other boats.

Is it? And nothing else, including the line, was caught up?

Just so weird with that plus no cameras.

Also, is the winning team's story that the props got it?

Why should it be DQ'ed? I don't see in the rules where they are following IGFA verbatim. In fact, it says the opposite.

"The tournament committee reserves the right to reject any fish entry because of poor condition or one that does not meet the eligible requirements set by this tournament. The condition of the fish will be left to the scrutiny of the tournament committee. THEIR DECISION IS FINAL."

Looking at the picture on the Facebook page the fish does look to have a pretty good hack on its face on the left side behind the eye like it might have gotten chopped.

IMO the tourney decided to stick it to Double J by counting this fish, and knocking them out of the money. Strictly based on the past beef between Double J and the tourney that I have read about. If it was another team on the border of prize money, the result may have been different, but we will never know.

The tourney knew who was in the money if that fish was counted and who wasn't.

Seems plain and simple to me.

FWIW, the crew successfully passed all polygraph Qs.

I don't know what Qs were asked, maybe JJ has posted them on THT by now like he was claiming he was going to.

I get the feeling that JJ thinks this fish wasn't caught during the tournament.
