Not really. One of the few things I remember from school.

Just a warning if you go crabbing behind the Big Lake weirs. You can use drop nets as long as they are not over 24" diameter. But you cannot use floats and string them out like the OP is doing. You have to tie them to your boat. The regulations are a little ambiguous. They read:
"Crabs may be taken with hand lines or drop nets. Only cotton line and drop nets up to 24” outside diameter may be used. Floats on crab lines are prohibited."
When I read the original post, I thought this would be a great way to crab in there. I wasn't sure after reading the regs if "crab lines" included drop nets. So I called the refuge and the game warden said floats on drop nets are not allowed. Too bad. Great system.

No one local to me sells those net traps, is wire mesh or nylon the preferred material?
Posted on 6/2/18 at 7:51 pm to CHEDBALLZ
This Gump discovered crabbing last year. Damn what a blast.
Will definitely be putting crab traps out when I go to DI in a few weeks.

It's not wire, nylon seems like a good idea, but locals might have other ideas.

Yeah that's what I was thinking. There's more people that seem to sell the wire, but it does say coated so I'm thinking its cheaper wire and maybe not coated so seems like that would get wrecked pretty quick.
ETA: Alario bros sells a dozen dipped ring nylon nets online for $145 to your door. Seems reasonable after shipping. Any other recommendations? They are out of NOLA.

That's pretty much what I use. I would call them to make sure they come with the rope and float. The ones we use have floating rope and half-sphere type floats.
ETA; Those rings are galvanized which many people with drop nets prefer. The stainless ones are shiny and the old timers say they scare the Crabs away. IDK if that's true or not, but don't hesitate to get galvanized rings. If you use them 5 times a year and rinse them after use they will last your forever.

One of my most memorable crabbing trips was with a friend of mine that did it to make a bit of extra money on his days off.
He ran 2 trot lines, each about 1000 ft. long and had bait hung about every 10 ft. or so off the line. He used hog snoots for bait since they were pretty sturdy stuff and lasted a couple trips before he had to replace them with new bait.
We caught 5 hampers of crabs that day and he sold 4 of them as soon as he got back to the launch and kept one with nothing but #1 crabs for us to boil.
That was the easiest time I've ever had catching crabs.

Space them about 200 yards apart. You need time to pull up the net, dump it make sure it has bait, and the tie wrap is tight, throw it back in and get on the next one
lord 200 yards apart? we might do 10ish. I run 3 dozen nets and use trout heads as bait. we bent welding rods into a snap hook shape and run it through the trouts eyes. never have to worry about bait coming loose

How long do you have to leave them in the water? This looks awesome.

I only run a dozen nets. Check them about every 20 minutes.

I think my kids would love this. They sell the nets at places like Academy, Puglias, and the like?
Thanks for the fantastic video.

Can't say for sure, but I'm thinking Fisherman's Net on Downman Rd. would have ready to use crab nets. Their business is selling nets for commercial fisherman, weekenders, etc.
I posted their number on a previous post. It is 504-244-8767. Give them a shout and see what they have to offer.

My buddy is catching spawning shad for bait for the upcoming fall.
