Youth Hunter, shooting a 243…150 yards or less, low light.
What would be your go-to for a low light scope suggestion?

What’s your budget?
How far you ahooting how low of light you talking about legal or past legal?!
I have a leupold freedom 2-7x32 that I could have shot a deer with at 200yd at the end of shooting light the other day.
It’s a 250$ scope I think

Nightforce
I mean, just look at the name. It’s a force at night.

So, since we don't have a budget here
My best low light scope i own is a leupild VX3i 2.5-8. Good glass and the reticle is a heavy duplex, excellent for "low light" up till shooting time is up.
My next scope will be a trijicon accupoint. I don't find the glass/exit pupil/etc to ever be the limiting factor in legal shooting time. It's always the reticle.

Not sure I have ever bought anything from Zeiss in the last 20 years that cost less than 1k.

This would be my suggestion. I have a 2.5-10x56 on my 35 whelen and have no problem hunting until the last minute of shooting time with it.
I have a leupold vx6hd 4-24x52 on my 28 nosler that’s over twice the price of the accupoint, and I prefer the accupoint over it. Don’t get me wrong, the vx6hd is a great scope too. I got it mainly for the CDS, to be able to reach way out there with my 28 nosler though.

The best thing for low light is a green plot that the dark deer doesn’t blend into. Also, buy the kid a decent pair of binoculars. They’ll have countless hours of enjoyment n the field with binos. And a bunch of scopes will serve you well in low light.
Mistakes on shooting the wrong deer are amplified in the last few minutes of legal light. Buttons get shot for does, six points get shot for eights. Teach the youngster that legal time and seeing well enough to shoot can be different on different days. I’ve had a couple of evenings this year were I’ve left a couple of minutes on the clock because it was overcast and got dark early.

Not sure I’d go putting a Z8 on a .243 for a kid. Thats overkill to infinity. Maybe a Z3 to start out. Which is what I did when son started out. Now he is older I’ll buy myself the Z8 and give him my Z6. Put the z3 on the .35 I’ve yet to purchase

The Freedom mentioned above is better than my hd at low light, especially for the $$ spent. Agree the older vx is much better than both. So much so that off season i'm gonna swap and put the older vx on the new rifle I'm using now.

I would not overthink it. Find something in your budget that is light and go with it. The scope is not going to be the limiting factor on his success.
