My dad taught me how to cast a baitcaster when I was probably 7. He had one spinning reel and hated it as did I. So I grew up throwing a baitcaster and I look like a monkey trying to hump a football with a spinning reel . They're just so damn awkward for me and I always get a few chuckles from fishing buddies over my inability to fish with a spinning reel.

This is exactly how I am as well. I never really used a spinning reel more than a handful of times until I met friends from Louisiana in college and went trout fishing with them

You seem to be missing a decimal in there.

3-4 MOA is far from accurate.

I've never seen someone throw a spinning reel into the water after frustration.
I've seen baitcasters thrown in the water out of frustration several times.
Strictly a salt water fisherman here.

I understand their appeal for bass fishing, but bringing them out to catch trout and redfish, especially when there is wind is just a stupid idea.

-skipping jig

It is not nearly as easy to skip a bait under a dock with a casting reel as it is a spinning reel....under it a few feet yes but I can skip a texas rigged worm under a dock from one side to the other and let it drop EXACTLY where it lands with a spinning reel where that requires peeling line off physically on a casting reel...and I don't think anyone can skip a bait with a casting reel as far as they can with a spinning reel consistently and I know that as soon as the bait stops moving forward it is falling toward the angler and not where it dropped....unless you are peeling line off by hand.

I don't like spinning reels for crank baits or buzz / spinner baits or live bait fishing for stripers / hybrids. Can't imagine using a casting reel though for flat lining a live bait...and that is my FAVORITE method of fishing that doesn't require a fly rod....

I bet you can't even cast a fly rod!

I was waiting to see who would post this.

Just for the record, I can use one, but I am embarrassed to use one around people here though. I am getting better.

A buddy of mine has a sweet gig where he manages a team of 6-8 people every summer made up of SCA, interns etc in the fishers department. They go out and do salmon counts, take fish samples, etc. Every year he has college kids show up with new expensive outfits and he pulls out a pink barbie doll poll and catches considerably more fish than them with it. He does this to get a point across to them that you don't have to have a fancy rig to catch fish. He also wants to get across the point that many of the locals still use a stick and line and are quite productive with that method.

Yeah I don't really get the gatekeeping that people do with fishing setups. I can cast with a spinning, baitcast, or fly setup. Just use what you like.

Lots of folks don’t know how to properly set the anti-backlash brake or they thumb the spool on a bait caster. Two common errors.

In heavy winds unstick to my spinning set ups. Also when trout or red fishing with a cork

I only use bait casters when bass fishing or not using live bait in saltwater

Don’t cast not the wind, simple fix my man. Set boat in correct position and cast down wind. Double your distance cast and puts less pressure on your fish.

I do just fine with a spinning.

Birdnested enough bait casters in my teens to realize I didn’t really need one.

As a kid I had a Zebco 303. My dad had a Ambassador 5000. It was my sole focus to learn how to cast a bait caster so I could "graduate" to the same kind of reel my dad threw. I think I got my Ambassador 5500C when I was 11 or 12. I've used it ever since. I now have more updated reels, all bait casters, all ABU Garcias.

But I fish almost exclusively fresh water for bass.

I've been fishing salt down in Bolivar and Sargent some lately with the bait casters and even though I rinse them really well, the salt still takes its toll.

So I'm thinking of buying a couple of spinning rigs. One for light tackle, to target sac-a-lait. And one set up for fishing big reds, specs, flounder, etc.

For me, half the fun of fishing is the art of the cast. Hitting the target exactly where you aim, then presenting the lure just right. Even on days when I've been skunked, if I was casting good, I was happy.

I’m the opposite. I can skip with a bait caster a looooong ways. I suck with the fairy sticks.

And the bait falls straight down with a bait caster too. There is always slack in a line after you cast. Always.

Once I learned a bait caster (teens) I felt like I had learned a new language.

I figured out that it all depends on the weight of the bait being used. Simply put, I would raise the tip of the rod skyward, then turn that knob on the right of the reel until the bait started to slowly drop to the ground. Then I tightened it a quarter of a turn. I avoided back lashing for the most part after I learned that.

Those tight corners of ponds were now mine for the taking on bass.

Time. Nobody got the time to learn how todo a thing. Not cast, back a trailer, load a boat, change oil or check shite on the truck, boat or trailer. Pay everybody to do everything or look it up on the internet.

I bought a 5000c when i was like 10. Went fishing with my Parrain who was the fishing Mecca to me back then. After birdnests and throwing it in the trees for about 2 hours he told me ‘put it down, don’t pick it up and don’t bring it back on my boat until you know how to thro it’. Weeks of chunking at every bait I had in the yard at leaves and buckets I was ready. Never looked back since. Eggbeatings and Zebcos have a place but a baitcaster reigns, don’t let knowbody tell you different
