Want a saddle toolbox...low profile...black...and one that isn't 20" wide...the truck only has a 5.5 foot bed. what is the Outdoor Board's favorite tool box brand...I know of Weather Guard, Northen, Kobalt...

What are main features I should be looking for when shopping for one of those things? Obviously, weather proof, easy to open, hard to break into, etc...any recommendations?

I've had a few different ones over the years on different trucks.

I've found the tractor supply brand works just fine compared to high dollar ones.

UWS has always worked fine for me, and they're not as expensive as Weather Guards.

Camlocker tool boxes. I know a lot of people that have them and all love them. They are felt lined on the inside and are very well made. Also have T handles which are much easier to open.

I’ve had a drivers side UWS toolbox for 15 years.
I think it looks cool, and it’s nice to access things from the side of your truck.

BUT... I will say that if you want to keep anything nice in there. Don’t. Everything gets full of this black soot. It’s aggravating.

I’ve cleaned it completely out several times over the years and laid down towels on bottom to try to prevent, but nothing that I’ve found works

I know a lot of people love UWS, but mine of 5yrs is a POS. Poor craftsmanship on my particular unit and I didn’t send it back like I should have.

My next will be a weatherguard or camlocker.

I have RKI bedside boxes. For a cross box I'd get one that sits on the bottom of your truck bed - I've seen many bed rails cracked due to the weight of the type that mounts atop the bed rails.

yes, very expensive. probably 2-3 times what a big box store box would cost. but they have a great reputation.

I'm pretty partial to RKI steel ones. Mine is 20+ years old IIRC, and has only had the locks replaced because the keys were lost. Other than that, everything is just like it came from the factory. I do not take care of it at all

I did bolt d-rings to mine to have another tie-down point. It would probably severely deform an aluminum box, but this one has held up with no problems.

It's very heavy, and requires a floor jack to get out of the bed

I’ve owned 2 from UWS and 1 Weatherguard. The first UWS was solid and the second one seemed a little flimsy. The Weatherguard was better than either UWS box.

I’ve had weather guards on all of my work trucks. They’re great and I think you really get what you pay for on truck boxes

Used to be biggest uws fan, have one that's six months and it's a piece of shite. Prior 3 I owned were amazing. Was told camlocker was now the best, but ignored advice due to my loyalty and past experiences.

Quality control went down. Broken welds, warped hinges and badly oxidized aluminum on a 6 month old box...

Are there any shallow enough that the front of kayaks would fit under?

Camlocker is the best toolbox brand IMO. All I will own.

Once you have one you will never want one of the others.
