AR-15 will be easiest for a woman to handle. Handguns will take a good bit more training.

If he has to have a pistol, a 1911 in 9mm is such a great gun.

Accurate, easy shooting, and the slide is easy to manipulate.

Where would you start with home defense hand guns, and more importantly, where would you start for a handgun for a female?

Find a local range that rents guns and shoot a bunch of them.

With regards to handguns for a woman, your first instinct would be to get something small. Weirdly that’s incorrect. A full size handgun is almost always going to be much easier to control. Although you will need to make sure you get something that can fit her hands and she can rack the slide.

For new and inexperienced gun owners checking out revolvers also isn’t a bad idea. Super easy to operate and there isn’t much that can break. (not that a semi-auto is much more difficult or prone to breaking)

This right here! This is the answer for all the reasons listed. Only possibly thing I can add would be to checkout the hammerless .38. Even more simple

Bring her to a store. Mine had to handle several before she found one she could actually work. Apparently, the one she ended up with was popular with women because the slide was easy

Buying a gun for the wife/GF can be tricky. If they are going to go to the range once and never shoot again I will get a G17 or other larger softer shooting pistol. If she wants to go and shoot frequently that opens the door to other guns. My wife shoots a Ruger LCR 357 with 38+p gold dots loaded in it. The big rubber grip mitigates recoil.

While it is a great gun, it is has a complicated and obsolete manual of arms.

If you like those traditional controls, go with a modern DA/SA like a classic Sig. Otherwise, go with a striker-fired 9mm.

Having to worry about the frame safety, grip safety and all that with a 1911-style is not worth the squeeze, IMHO. For enthusiasts, it's fine. For folks with a lot of experience with the platform, it's fine.

For a novice, it is not the weapon to carry for self-defense.

Yes but they tend to be lighter weight and snappy.

Since this would be at home I'd go for the heavy less recoil. Follow up shots are a lot better unless you've shot the hammer less a lot.

Like someone else said, just stay with a shotgun since you know shotguns and this is for home defense.

But if you want a handgun, then line someone else said, you should go rent some. There are so many different brands and calibers. Any major brand will be reliable enough so it’ll be a matter of preference. If you’re not carrying it anywhere then you’ll want a full size.

Caniks are my personal favorite for 9mm bc of their triggers.

Myself, I have a Glock20 (10mm) downstairs and a Canik SC Elite (9mm) upstairs.

It’s possible y’all might also like a revolver. A full size revolver with 38spl won’t have much kick and there is no side to worry about.

I would go to several gun stores to see which handgun best fits you and your fiance's hands. If there is a gun range near you where you can try the guns you guys like. I would rent one. If this is you or your fiance's first time handling a firearm. i would recommend taking a begineer handgun class. I do not recommend a pistol with a short slide. The longer the slide the easier it is to aim the pistol. A full size pistol isn't a problem since you are not trying to conceal it. IMO friends don't let friends buy .380 pistols.

FOr me my bump in the night gun is an AR15.

I bet a pistol caliber carbine would be great. I wouldn’t want to shoot rifle rounds indoors if I have other options. Too damn loud.

Plenty of options-- try before you buy. I'd consider getting two of the same guns and setting them up the exact same way. You don't want her forgetting that your 1911 isn't a Glock under duress.

Also, not trying to be a d1ck here, but why do folks suggest ARs for home defense? Seems like too many big rounds through too many walls to me. If you want an AR, then have one by all means because 'Merica, but I don't get it for this use case.

I upvoted because I own one. I would not get this as a first gun, it's smaller and stiff as all hell for the first 300 rounds or so.

Not too many bullets out there that aren't going through sheetrock and basic siding. I have an AR-15 ready and laid out sight lines that do not include the neighbors house. It's also a hell of a lot easier to handle an AR-15 with a light than a pistol with a light, and bump in the night you better have a light.

Yep, revolver might be a bad idea also at least as first gun to shoot. My wife tried this and was terrified after shooting a compact revolver with .38. Better to start with the AR or something like a cz scorpion maybe.

I bought an American Tactical 20 ga for the wife at home.

Small and light weight and easy to load.

If your woman is the average woman, I'd suggest a smaller wheel gun. Those triggers aren't accidentally pulled very easily. They take no brains to understand how to operate, without much training at all.

The most important thing for her to have is a weapon she will not have to consciously -think- to use in a bad situation, which is the point of a handgun.

Many women are too afraid to use a handgun in a bad situation. I'd almost recommend one of those pepper spray guns they're pushing on conservative radio, instead.

You need to do your research on this.

A small very fast bullet doesn't penetrate as many walls as a heavier slower moving pistol round.
