Alright guys. Looking to get my first dog thats “mine.” I’m looking for something to take on my outdoor adventures, retrieving waterfowl (mainly dry fields but some marsh), hiking, running, picking up chicks in the park, the usual.

My ideal dog would be somewhat small (I’m not looking for a 100lb lab. One of my friends has a small lab that is perfect), a retriever, can be left alone for 8-9 hours at a time, easy to groom and clean up after, and good with other dogs (at least won’t eat them).

Of course a lab is an option, it’s just they’re so ubiquitous and cliche, I guess with good reason. I like GWPs and GSPs, but they’re a little harder to get a hold of. Anything else I should be looking at?

Labs shed like crazy, wouldn’t say easy to clean if inside dog. We have a standard poodle, he’s about 65 lbs at 1 yr 5 months. They can be trained to retrieve and don’t shed. Expensive though

Silver or fox red lab everyone on here loves them...
I don’t like to be “cool” so I have a plain Jane chocolate lab he does great at tracking deer shot by 6.5 cripplemores as well as any ducks that the flatbills two ponds over skyblast and fall in my pond.
Bad thing is you can’t brag about him like a labradoodle and say how great he is and that he’s “ just as good or better than any lab”

I can barely look at any duck dog that’s not a black lab idk why. I have a black female reserved, second pick of the litter from a great bloodline, can’t wait for her to get here. I had a 6 year old black male that I trained myself and he recently became protective of his food out of no where and bit my daughter so he had to go, killed me but I know I made the right decision, he lived inside, still can’t believe he did that.

I have a friend that is a GSP breeder. His dogs will retrieve geese, ducks, and point pheasants, quails, grouse, and chukars. No clue on the price. I'm sure its $1000+
In Washinton State though

The boykins and pudels are very intriguing. What’s the energy level/exercise requirements of a Boykin? I know the pudels/GWP/GSP are super high or it gets problematic

Google Deutsch-Drahthaar. My buddy has one and it’s pretty cool, never heard of the breed before but it did well retrieving ducks the one time I hunted
With it.

I know someone who is giving away about a 2-3yr old GSP if your interested.

With that being said I’d still recommend a lab over any dog out there.

Another vote for a Standard poodle! After owning one, I'd never go back to a lab!

Blue Lacy. Closest I know who sells them is a guy in Mississippi. He has one female Tri color left in a litter ready next week.
