Log Splitter

I am thinking about getting a log splitter for my house. Not looking to split any really large logs, just stuff to burn in the fireplace. Doing some reading I think 25 tons will do the job. Any suggestions on size, which one to get or any other recommendations?

I bought a kindling cracker from northern tool. They had them on clearance. Works pretty well but not sure about doing a whole cord or something.

Bought a 27 ton champion from Home Depot last year , me and my neighbors have used it plenty, only problem was a busted hydraulic hose and champion got us a new one quickly, would recommend it

Have used the County Line 25 ton from Tractor Supply for about 8 years now with zero issues. We use a lot of wood to heat our home so it gets used quite a bit and has handled everything we’ve needed. 25 ton should be fine.
It switches to vertical mode and back very easily. One person can do it quickly.
Best attachment we bought was the log catcher that goes on the opposite side of the operator. Saves a ton of extra lifting with the big stuff.
Bought ours on a Black Friday sale for $699!

A few years ago I ordered a Harbor Freight 20 ton with the Predator 212cc engine.
It can be ordered for 1k. It works well and parts are easily found or the Predator 212. (Or easily swapped out and replaced)

We had a big orange maul back in the day. Never were mechanized.

Tried the Lowe’s splitters and had problems with both I tried. Bought the TSC version at 25 ton. Going strong for 4 years now

I have a little 5 ton electric log splitter that I am more than happy with. Any time a tree or branch falls, I cut it into 19" logs and then sit on a bucket and run the splitter. It's slower than gas powered, but also smaller and quieter. Doesn't have a problem with pecan or oak, but it works best if you split it soon after you cut it.

And you can cancel your gym membership.

My kids run a pretty good size firewood operation splitting and selling a few hundred cords per year. They have some large splitters, splitter attachment for excavator etc, but also have two of the county line splitters from tractor supply. those things have been really good so far. They get a lot of use from one of our Hondurans splitting on it and have had zero issues. Split oak, pecan etc with zero issues

Two suggestions:
Buy one that flips to vertical as already mentioned and save your back !!!
Don’t try to split sections of logs with forks or where big limbs grew off the sides.
Too tough on the splitter.
Straight grain will split a heck of a lot better.
An outfeed table a little lower than the splitter also helps so most of the pieces land on it rather than the ground….
Again, save your back !!!!
Back pain SUCKS

I bought a 28 ton yardmax from Logsplittersdirect.com in 2021.
We’ve split a lot of wood with it and loaned it out a few times. It’s got plenty power and has been reliable. I think I paid 1100 for it new.

Rent, plan your splitting in one day. Starts every time and zero maintenance.
