I gigged all my young life but haven’t in about 20 years. I’m going to spend a good bit of time on some areas this summer that will afford me the chance to get back into it. I have my gig which is an old mortar hoe handle with a spike driven into it. It’s long and heavy so I can gig and hold a flounder with one hand. I’ve always used a Coleman lantern with a pie plate and have several and had friends that tried handheld q beams that didn’t work. Too much light.

My question is, since lights have come a long way, is there anything out there that could be used in lieu of Coleman lantern? A specific headlamp maybe?

For your effort:

There's a lot of LED options for this, but the truth is, I haven't heard anybody say any of them work better than a lantern and a pie plate. Something about that combination and the fact it doesn' create a lot of glare that just works.

Get a Princeton led dive light, an adjustable metal hose clamp, and build a 1/2” pvc pole with an arm rest and 45° angle on the bottom. Bottom piece is about 12” from the 45, 3-4’ section to a t coupler, another foot or so section above that. And about a foot section for the arm rest coming out of the t. I’ll get better measurements when I’m home tomorrow but that’s what we all use, and the led is a serious floundering light.

Too bright IMO. I use their single LED version but I think anything brighter increases the percentage of spooked flounders. But that’s just one man’s opinion.

I don't have any issues with scared off flounder from the double. I am mindful of heavy footfalls and think that would be more likely to blow the spot

Those underwater LEDs are legit. Just make sure you do a trial run before you get to floundering hole. Had several adjustments to do on mine. So much easier than the old Coleman’s.

Only did it this once with a buddy whose it was also his first time. All I can tell you is got to where the river meets the ocean. Water proof led lights on pvc with wires run into backpack with battery . Oversized gig. Low tide. Sandbars. Look for at set of eyes. Don't know much other than it can be done and is a good time. Hopefully somebody will chime in. Definitely wanna take my boys as they are getting older. I won't (more than likely) be anywhere near the great state of Louisiana.

You can build your own with a light from oznium.com. I’ve built 6 of them myself. Easy to build.

Led lights

I built mine with the 20watt green lights. They are threaded in the back to screw a pvc nipple. He did that specifically for gig light builds. I’ll have to find the plans but way easy. It comes with domed and flat glass lenses. I use the flat. They work awesome. The green is great but some also like the warm white. I prefer green.

Also, you just remove the mounting plate. It has a screw on each side and the hole doesn’t penetrate the body. They are siliconed in the rear to make them water tight also.

ETA: found the plans. Oznium led gig light plans
These plans are awesome and I promise these are the only lights you will ever need. When I built mine, the 50watt lights weren’t a thing. They would be unreal but not sure how fast they would drain a deer feeder battery. The 20w won’t drain the battery for 4 or so hours. By the way, just make the battery connection wires long enough. Battery goes in a backpack you wear on your back. Also, I did not install a switch. Just disconnect mine from the battery when done or moving spots. The switch is cool it figured it could be a point of failure you can just do without.

Mostly on the islands off of Mississippi, and they should be starting to show up. I have done well just on the main beach in miss as well. Pick a spot from Pass to Biloxi, lots of good floundering through there.

With the exception of getting burned by the Coleman, it is about all you need. A LPG Coleman with a reflective shield was almost perfect. And your gig though not state of the art was deadly effective also. I don't see why you need to really upgrade from that nearly perfect setup but I understand we are in the modern times so LEDs and batteries may be nice but are not needed.

With a quick look on the internet I'm not sure Coleman makes the handle reflector lantern accessory anymore.
