I believe mine had to be the quickest approval in LA CHP history. 2 Fridays ago I went to LA State police HQ and did Fingerprints, I submitted online the day before. The following Tuesday I received approval and that next Friday had my ID. 7 days till completion.

TOTH:
Sorry your application got "hung up." I guess in any system (especially government entities) mistakes happen.
You're very much "spot on" when you say that the BR scanned fingerprint process is the common element for those getting fast processing.
About 3-4 years ago, LSP called in all the CCW instructors for a meeting (to ask that we all refrain from offering abbreviated classes for renewal - some complied, some didn't). But the interesting factoid that came out of that meeting was their telling us that over 40% of the old style "ink & roll" prints are rejected by the FBI due to legibility problems. The wanted to spread the word that everyone should use the digital scanner.
I know that driving to BR to use the scanner can be a hassle. And I know that applications can still get "hung up" for other reasons. But for folks with "clean" applications (no arrests, no divorce decrees, etc.), use of the online application system, coupled with the digital scanner, has reduced the turnaround time dramatically for 98% of applicants.
I haven't heard of a single one of my students who filed online w/ digital prints who has waited more than 3 weeks for their permit. (I'm sure their probably are some, but none has called to tell me about it).
I wish there were a better way to get the word out about online/scanner usage.

quote:please clarify on this: does this mean that if you buy a gun online and have it shipped to somewhere, they don't charge you to run the background check? You just pick the gun up?
And when you get your permit, (a) no more background checks when buying guns

The fee you pay, is a fee to the store for their time and trouble of dealing with your gun. The CC license gives you the ability to skip the NICS check, the store just uses your concealed carry license info and you are good to go...

If you have submitted your application online for a CHP renewal, give them a call at: (225) 925-4867. The person I spoke with renewed mine with a click of a button. It helps speed the process along. Let them know you understand they have a backlog, but you're just checking to see what's the turn-around time on renewals.

There's always a long line waiting for fingerprinting. There's almost never anyone waiting to talk to the CCW clerk. She can/will look up the status of your application while you're standing there
p.s. I just renewed mine online -- submitted May 19th -- approved June 1st (8 business days).

Pepper spray isn't usually considered to be an adequate substitute for a firearm.

This does not apply to all. I got my ccl in 2013... recently(few weeks ago)had to go thur the background check. Dealer showed me a letter stating the waiver was for permits issued 2015 and later??

They must be on to this b/c I called earlier and could not get to an operator. Just a bunch of options for different "information". After a while I tried hitting "0" and "#" a bunch and nothing...
Did you get an option to speak with someone? Or did they just pick up the phone?

Thank God I don't have to worry about this shite. Hopefully LA will join the movement and become a Constitutional Carry state.

This thread just reminded me that mine expired last month. Anyone recommend an instructor in Ascension/BR area that I can retake class to renew?
Posted on 6/12/17 at 4:43 pm to Tbooux
My renewal is next year but Indread it already. May not cause I hate paperwork.

I'm glad that worked for you, but it doesn't work for many. I called TENS of times during my renewal process before finally talking to a clerk. OTOH, a friend of mine called to check on his status, talked to a clerk the first time and was told the renewal was just awaiting payment (they'd not yet sent him the notification for payment). He gave it to them over the phone at that time and had the renewal. That's the weird thing about the process. Every now and then it goes really fast and phone calls are quickly answered, but not usually....

Pretty good deal ($125 for a 5-year permit averages out to $.07 per day). Even if you add in the cost of the class (I charge $85), it's still less than $.12 per day. (How much is a pack of cigarettes a day -- $5.50 ??)
Avoiding background checks and getting to carry a loaded pistol in over 30 other states -- well worth it to me. I'm sure others have a different opinion (and I don't really care
Looking like a pol tax

The man welcomes you to the system.
Hope you at least opened carried while you were waiting

I found out last week while picking up a gun at my local FFL transfer place that ATF told him that this is at the discretion of the license holder and that he was advised by this agent to continue using the forms. Freaking Feds.

Submitted online application on the afternoon of 7/13/17, showed up bright and early the next morning at state police headquarters for digital fingerprints. Paid fees online that same afternoon (Friday 7/14/17). Just received email that my permit was approved today, 7/18/2017. Just waiting on snail mail to bring the permit. If you are planning to apply soon, I recommend following the same procedure as several others have mentioned. Seems to be the ticket.
