I’ve been considering moving out west but not sure which state to narrow down the search. I know it’s my decision in the end but I’m looking for positive and negatives to some. I’ve considered Colorado, Wyoming, Montana, western Nebraska and western Kansas. Not looking to move to a big city but within a hour of a big town or city is fine. I’ve always lived in the country and hated the little I’ve lived in a city. Looking for areas or towns and interesting things about them. I plan on making a road trip to check out towns and areas as soon as I can. Thanks for any help.

Montana just had a 40” snow fall.

Look into Utah and Idaho too. Unlike some of your other choices, both have fairly large cities with decent airports. They're both absolutely stunning. NW Wyoming is beautiful, but the rest of the state isn't that great. The largest city is Cheyenne with a population of about 60K.

I’ve lived in the snow and cold before and it’s easy to underestimate it. That said I could do it again but not sure my southern family could.

I drove through eastern Idaho last year and was very impressed.

Idaho. Gorgeous, low population and not expensive.

Idaho is nice but I didn't know they had an income tax on top of their sales tax.
Can be near Spokane and have a short drive to the many nearby lakes in Idaho.
Both areas are lovely if you don't need the ocean nearby like myself.

Drove from BR to Oregon last year, two places that stood out were the Wallsburg area of Utah and 30 min outside of Boise (really awesome) in any direction

Good people. But eastern Idaho sees some of the worst winter weather in the US.
We vs action up there for Christmas or new years

What's your profession? Knowing that will help a ton trying to narrow it down. I've traveled around all of the states you speak, but not that extensively in Montana.
I can tell you that Utah's economy is booming (at least in the Urban areas), with cost of living following suit. Still a great place to live. On the flip side, most of the economies in small town Mid-America is hanging on. It's beautiful and the people are wonderful, but it can be a tough existence.

Colorado would be 1st off the list, it's a great place to visit but it's not what it used to be. The western half of Wyoming is great, the east side is a no go. Montana and Idaho would be at the top of my list for the west. Those winters are no joke though, keep that in mind.

Utah, within an hour or so of Salt Lake. It's out west and has all the hunting, fishing, skiing, and mountains you can stand. However, it is still conservative compared to Colorado or Montana. Love it out there.

I lived near Boise for 4 years.
It's awesome.

Northeast, sure. The Southeast part is pretty bland. Brother lives in the tri cities and it's brown.
Got a friend who just moved to Couer and loves it. Sand point, Kellogg, Wallace are nice places in Idaho.

Wyoming, Montana,
One of these 2 or Idaho.
Utah could be cool too.
Colorado is probably the best one but you have to deal with shitty liberal politics
