It's funny seeing the calibers used in James Bond novels.

His main gun for years was the Baretta .25. Hell, he was having 50 yard gunfights and killing people with it. Then he moved up to the Walther PPK but that of a .32 caliber. Scaramanga said it was a real stopper. Um, yeah. The discussion of firearms with the armorer in Dr. No was pretty funny.

Would you be willing to stand at 50 yards and let me shoot at you with one?

Well, to be fair, .32 is a decent upgrade from any Beretta .25 (implicitly in the novels it is almost certainly a 318 or 418, with an outside possibility Fleming meant a 950 jetfire). And, also in the novel, Q gives him a .38 revolver as well (a Centennial Airweight to not catch when drawn, a plot point from a prior novel). They cut that from the film and it does make it a little amusing with that omission.

In Live and Let Die, he used a Model 29 (after Dirty Harry of course). So, there's that.

ETA: And Fleming started from his own experience - apparently carrying a Beretta .25 when he served in British naval intelligence.

this is the correct answer.

Bond's job is being a spy, not a mercenary. He needs a small piece he can sneak around with. He's only using it to deter people from taking him prisoner or shooting at him. He isn't shooting at methed out home invaders, crips, bloods, or storing Omaha beach.

So back to the question "would you be willing to stand at 50 yards and let me shoot at you with it?" HECK NO. So it's effective in his line of work.

Secret agent - he was more worried about concealment. 9mm CC sized guns weren't as popular years ago as they are in recent years.

Id go as far as saying 9mm concealed carry pistols weren't a thing at all when Flemming was writing the books. He started writing them in the 50's. A commander sized 1911 was probably the only full power concealable pistol at that time, and thats a big chunk of iron to hide in a fitted suit.

Its hilarious in the movies to see bond smoking guys at 50 yards with a 2,836 round capacity PPK. Dude will take on a full company of AK47 weilding soldiers, blast half of them, and jump on a helicopter skid without getting a scratch. Its kinda what makes Bond movies/books great.

I was working nights in the ER years ago. Two guys came in from a pool hall. First guy was shot point-blank in the forehead with a 25cal pistol. The bullet tracked under the skin and was sitting above his left ear. Didn't even cause a skull fracture. He flipped his cue stick over and proceeded to beat the shooter to a pulp. The shooter came in unconscious, with skull fracture and brain bleeding, went to surgery then ICU. The other guy went home from ER, after we made a tiny incision and removed his bullet for evidence for PD. ....

but, would I let u shoot at me from 50 yards with a 25cal pistol? Hell no.

It's the "experts" such as the armorer and Scaramanga calling a .32 a "stopper".

Reminds me of Debt of Honor when Clark and Chavez shot with the Russians using thei Russians' pistols and were almost laughing at them.

It's the European / UK thing as well. They don't look at firearms/calibers the way we do here in the U.S.

I met some cops from Bern, Switzerland years ago and we ended up talking about sidearms. Those dudes were carrying .380's on duty and were shocked when learning that American cops carried .357 magnums and 12 gauge shotguns.

One of the guys laughed at all of us and related that he worked in a rural community and his police department had two pistols they shared. But they kept them at the station and had to get a supervisor to unlock the box they were kept in if they wanted to take one on patrol.
