Is it hard to raise a puppy? Update 10/10/17

I have the opportunity to get a really cute 8 - 9 week Maltipoo. However, my wife and I just went through IVF with implantation today. She is on bedrest for the next few days then goes back to work and I am working the for the next 7 days straight. We're not sure that we can give a puppy the time it requires/deserves at this stage of its life. We'd be gone some days for over 10 hours together, with no possibility to go back home and check on it. Everything that I've read indicates that it needs a lot of companionship when first removed from its parents and siblings. Thanks for any insights.
Update 10/10/17.
So we ended up getting one of the puppies a few weeks later, the runt. Cute as can be and a joy. She's laying next to me pooped after her longest walk to date. When I finally make an Imgur account or something, I'll post a pic.
Our first embryo with IVF did not stick. We mulled it over for a while and decided to give it one more shot. Got one more embryo and happy to report that my wife is now 13 weeks pregnant and hating every minute of the last two months or so (not happy to report the last part). She's having a ton of nausea but not vomiting, so that's a plus.
Thanks for the previous responses, figured I owed you guys an update.

If you have to question this, do not get one. You can always get a puppy when you are able to spend the time to do so. It is not something to rush into because not only is it a lot of work, it is unfair for the puppy.

Uhh yeah that's not gonna work for a puppy.

Unless he's cool with locking dog up and having piss and shite wherever that may be. I wouldn't suggest it. I have a male house dog that is 5 now and he gets walked twice a day. Around 8AM and 5PM. He shits every afternoon in the same spot. Not the same as a puppy though. You have to spend time with them to train them if you ever want to be able to get to this point.

Yeah, you need to worry about other things right now. The right time will come along at some point, but this doesn't sound like it's the right time.

A pup is a good bit of work and a lot of attention. Y'all could do it for sure, but I would wait until things dial down a bit. But then again, if you wait for a baby you're definitely not going to want to mess with a puppy.
And prayers sent on the IVF, and I mean that. We went through 8 months of IUI And just had a baby girl last month. It was the most up and down emotions of my life.

A puppies bladder is small. You'd have to invest in pallets of puppy pads

I am gone over 11 hours a day for work. My pup stayed in a kennel while I was gone. She pissed in it every day for about 3 months and never shite in it.
I would wake up about 30 minutes
early every day and wear her out before leaving. It wasn't ideal, but it wasn't the end of the world either.
If you really want one, get one, the pup will be fine.

Good luck with the IVF treatment. My wife and I have done it 3x. Our first child will be born any day now.

Just because you did that doesn't mean that it's alright to do. Puppies, especially working breeds, need socialization and tasks throughout their early lives. Those are the most formative months of a dog's life. A 7wk old puppy should not be in a crate for 11 hours a day, nor should a puppy ever be conditioned to understand that pissing in its crate is acceptable.
There are ways around this. Bring the dog to work, get the help of relatives, s/o's, etc., but if you're gone for 10+ hours a day, please do not get a puppy. Especially a working breed. The dog deserves better than that.

She wasnt conditioned to think that pissong in her crate is acceptable. As soon as she was able to hold it, she stopped. Hasn't done it since.
She has had plenty of socialization. She goes everywhere with me and always has. Being stuck in her kennel has had no ill effect, she's a completely normal dog that has a much better life than most.
She doesn't have any reservations or hesitation getting in her crate now, she doesn't piss or shite inside, she's a perfectly adjusted dog. She's not scarred in the least.

This may seem crazy, but from experience, getting 2 pups at the same time made things a lot easier when my dogs were pups, about half the normal puppy problems. Brother and sister from same litter, got the male fixed. They kept each other entertained, and helped with the separation anxiety when they were first separated from their mom.

My wife and I got a puppy last June. She became pregnant the first week of July. I got into football season (I'm a coach) and she was coming home from work every day too tired to work with the dog. Fast forward to now the dog has separation anxiety issues and is extremely protective over us if anyone comes over. My wife had the child a bit premature last week and will be in NICU in Baton Rouge (2 hours away from me) until March. We have hired a trainer to help us with the dog. We need to correct all the behaviors that WE allowed him to develop because we couldn't put in the time with him. In other words I have roughly a month to get the dog right before my daughter comes home. My wife will mostly be in BR with the child and I'm at work from 6-6 (now in baseball season) so literally every moment of free time I have will be spent working with the dog. Moral: Don't get a puppy if you don't have the time for it.

Timing is a bit off, I think. Wait a while--there will be another one.

My daughter just turned one, and it took three ivfs. You need to concentrate on that now. It is stressful enough without having to worry about a new puppy.

Reason #345,864 why all dogs belong outside.

I somewhat agree but if you want to crate train, you have to be there for your puppy. I crate trained and my dog stays outside in a kennel run all day while I'm gone.

Best of luck to you your family! That baby will be home before you know it.
I had the same concerns with one of my dogs that was territorial and prey driven. I brought back the swaddles, and anything with a scent of the baby back and would either put it in his bed or tie it around his neck like a handkerchief. 2 months in and he's absolutely head over heels with her and fine with our other dog being around her as well.
