How do you think you’re head elk hunting? You drew a tag or you didn’t at this point. .270 will do fine. Try 150 grain Nosler Partitions and see how they group.

.270 will take down any game in America. Do some research before you go. Find a range and sight it in when you get there. Throwers at the airport will chunk your shite around. Don’t trust the sights to be the same upon arrival.

It’s just the smallest target, well, next to a head shot.

Interested to hear this as well. It’s a proven and very popular elk caliber

It's not that I dont think it's a decent elk caliber, it's just not what I would go buy for shooting elk. For me, 180gr .30 cal stuff is as small as I want to use.

buffalo bore writeup

Tim @ buffalo bore does an interesting writeup on shooting elk.

Live? Probably not.

But they can walk miles and you may never find them. Had a hunting partner lose a cow like that.

People take a shot on neck shots because they are hard shots to make for 1 and they see a person who they think is trying to be a badass, shooting for the neck.

I do it for several reasons.(I switched from vitals to neck shots around the age of 16) I lost several deer shooting for vitals either from a bad shot, lack of blood, area is too thick or a combination of the 3.

Neck meat wastes my time. I've seen people not worry about cutting the tenderloin out but spend an hour or more trying to cut meat off the neck. So if 8m not trying to harvest the neck, no sense in placing a shoulder shot and risk the chance of not only messing up one shoulder but 2.

Shooting I'm the neck takes practice. You shoot the neck, all doubt is erased. You are either gonna hit it or miss it. You won't have to have sleepless nights wondering if you passed a clean shot or if you gun is off or if you just blew it. You shoot them in the neck, they going down. Most collapse where they stand.

My stepdad has always been 1 shot one kill and had tried 59 convince me to take a neck shot and I would never do it because it was intimidating. Nerves already maxed out now I'm supposed to hit this tiny area!? 8 missed the first few I shot at, impatient I'm sure... But when 8 finally past a neck shot and hit, I was hooked. Seeing the deer collapse lifeless right where I shot at him made me incredibly confident in my aim. Now, it just comes natural.

As weird as this is, I picture myself as having to take a "Hostage" shot, ie. I have to make a kill shot or I lose type of situation. This helps keep my breathing calm and focus sharp.

I also adjusted my neck shot from where most people shoot the neck. A lot of people shoot for mid neck to where I have slid down the base of the neck where it meets the front shoulder. You hit anywhere that area, they going down. Especially since Ive moved from Rem Corelokt to Fed Primum vital shok, Vital Shoks have never let me down but I know some people who swear they won't even draw blood. IDK... Just my reasoning.

Yes, as said before, shot placement and bullet are key.

I disagree. You can hit an animal in the neck without hitting the spine or the windpipe. Then what? I can assure you it’s not going down quickly. Now you’ve got a real waiting and tracking game on your hands. Especially with an elk.

Fitting

You didn't lose deer because you were shooting at vitals. You lost deer because your shot sucked. "Area too thick" as a reason for not finding a deer is a total frickin cop-out and you should be ashamed you posted that. It either admits you are lazy AF or you just suck at woodsmanship.

You know you can shoot a deer through the lungs and not mess up a shoulder or neck, right?

This is false. There are plenty places in the neck you can hit a deer and not only will he run off, it's not fatal. There's this thing called a spine that runs through a deer's neck. If you don't damage it, he doesn't necessarily die. Yes, you can clip arteries and the deer bleed out. But you wouldn't do that because you don't track deer in areas that are "too thick" anyway. And you are a total badass that's never had a deer take a step since you started neck shooting.

You took bad shots and shot into thick stuff and couldn’t find the deer, so now let’s take neck shots. Makes sense

No, just no
You can take out it’s throat if you aren’t careful
