I didn’t see a master thread in the stickied FAQ thread.

If y’all are up for it I figured we can make a master inshore saltwater fishing gear recommendations thread:

What would you consider absolutely essential to a tackle box?

Best hooks? Size? Weight?

When to use a cork?

Best beginner rod and reel?

Line recommendations? Color? Test?

Leader recommendations?

Best lure/bait recommendations for:

Redfish
Specs
Flounder
Croaker
Bass

Owner inshore slam hooks
Seaguar premier fluoro leaders
Sufix 832 braid
Shimano reels
Alot of rods will work fine

This is some of the stuff I use. I'm sure there is more than 1 answer.

Matrix shad in shrimp creole, honestly all the colors work
I use H&H jig heads 1/4-3/8 oz. double or single rigged
Fake,I mean artificial shrimp of your choice - I use TKO in shrimp creole from Matrix. DOA, Vudu, whatever you want, I find they all work under a popping cork when they want shrimp and are not being picky enough for live.
Popping corks! I use the old school weighted Styrofoam corks but they make some fancy corks these days
Mirrolures! They have some good styles on sale at Academy on clearance for $1.48-$2.48!!! 52MR, Topdog, Shedog, mirrodine, Popping mullet are some of the few I picked up. 52MR EC and TTR/STTR EC are my go to.
I use Octopus hooks for live bait under those popping corks or on a drop shot
Some 2oz egg sinkers and some beads to make knocker rigs with a 7/0 or similar hook for rigging crab for Reds/Black drum

All this.. If you are unsure of what color soft plastic (cocahoe, curly tail, etc...) to use then go with Chartreuse color. I also usually throw hard baits in a red head/white body or bone/neon green.

If I was just starting out and didn'want to pay Shimano prices for a spinning rod/reel then I would buy Okuma or Daiwa. I think their new reels are nice and the Okuma "DTB" rods at Puglias feel really nice.

I am fond of Penn reels. I have the Fierce and Spinfisher series. Shimano are pricey.

Rods - I use St Croix, Fierce (combo), and Offshore Angler (Bass Pro combo).....Lews are a good reasonable cost option.

As far as corks, I am a fan of the rattle corks (i.e. Bayou Thunder, Bombers, etc.).....they are beneficial here in TX.

I am all in on live bait (shrimp, croker, minnows, pin fish, etc.). My typical rig is a lead jig head on a mono leader. Octo hooks as well. I will use a gold spoon, chartreuse plastics, and red plastics in SoTx.

For fishing without a cork, I use a homemade Carolina rig of 30# mono, 3 small FIXED lead weights (maybe 1/2 oz total) and Octopus circle hooks. Avoid the pre-rigs with metal leaders as they are unnatural. Just make your own......Youtube it.

Double rigs
-jig heads
(Purple,yellow,clear,cayenne sparkle beetles)
-shrimp
Mirrolures
Popping korks
Carolina rigs
Spoons
Etc.

I personally use a Abu Garcia C3 5500 ambassadeur on a ugly stik 7ft medium/ extra fast with 12lb test mono. I’ve slayed trout and redfish with this combo. (Tip: mark on your rod 12 & 15 inches)

Since I do plenty of wade fishing, I keep a stringer and a pocket box with me so I don’t hook myself with my lures.

Is there a perfect trout rod? I have a bunch of reels that need rods, and this is one gap I think I have.

i like the St. Croix 7' medium-light, but I fish mostly topwaters and dive baits.

I also still have some old falcon rods that I use.

I don't know that they make the lighter rods anymore. BTW, I hate the rods with the bulb on the butt end, as opposed to the full cork.

Squid, egg sinkers and J hooks. $25 spinning combo from wally world with 3 year old 10 lb mono pre loaded....those coils of line act like a shock leader when the drag freezes up.

I do too, and I wish they made it in a baitcaster. I use the ML for reds (and the occasional spec), but I'm going for slot reds in Florida, not huge bulls. The rod will do most of the fighting for you if you let it. The more I've fished, the lighter my tackle has gotten.

I haven't seen anybody mention Owner Mosquito hooks. I use them weightless or Texas rigged with a gulp shrimp on a ML spinning setup and I love it. That wire hook gets the corner of their mouth every single time.
