Purchasing an AR soon, specifically the S&W M&P Sport II chambered in 5.56/.223, and wanting to know what I should attach to it

Really just depends on what you plan to do with it. Avoid the temptation to gripod.

an optic of choice and lots and lots of ammo.

If you are shooting off hand, kneeling/sitting or prone a good quality 2 point sling for stability.
That and Ammo.
That and Ammo.

Wait, I almost forgot. If it comes with an A2 grip that needs to go immediately.
Ammo. Sling. Any grip besides the A2.

The honest truth is as few accessories as possible. Some people want their rifles to do everything and then they end up weighing about 12 pounds and are bulky as hell.
Some of the essentials I'd say - backup sights and a way to attach a sling. That's pretty much it. If it's a defensive carbine, maybe a flashlight of some sort but that's not even completely necessary.
The best advice - keep your gun simple. It will still fire the same way no matter what crap you put on it.

Good optic of choice, sling, extra mags, and ammo are must haves.
New trigger, free float handguard, and ambi safety are nice to have.

Good iron sights. That's all you need. Everything else is lagniappe.

I always liked the BCM enhanced charging handle. Other than that good flip up sights and sling.

Unless they've changed, it comes with very serviceable front and rear irons.
I've got the first version, and bought the second for my wife.
I was going to ad an optic but never did, I shoot it too well to justify it, and I haul it dirty and don't have to worry about destroying an optic.
Get a sling of your choosing and shoot it a while, then you'll know more about what accessories you'd like to have.

First thing. Replace trigger. Second: ergogrip grip. Third: magpul buttstock.

Just remember, tacticool isn't a statement, it's a lifestyle.

USGI 30 & 20 round mags, ammo, sling, cleaning kit, iron sights, and, if your vision in bad, optic sights may be required.

OP Midway USA is running another magpul 30 Rd magazine sale 10 for $79.99. Might want to stock up on some.
