I totally blanked on this but I've fired a .22 pistol many times. I forgot I went armadillo hunting a year or so ago. probably fired that think over 200 times that weekend. I have a .22 revolver at my house. I also forgot about it (because it is broken)

Most revolvers have an 9 lb.+ trigger when fired double action. Kinda hard to accidentally pull those triggers.

You need to find a way for this to be automatically posted in first handgun threads

OP,

Go buy a s&w m&p, a glock, or Springfield xdm. Great semi auto pistols. A 9mm probably better caliber to start and shoot first. Any other advice is over complication

I carry every place I go although it is generally open carry on my duty belt. When I am not working I always conceal carry unless I am on the beach.

In town now. HWC got in town yesterday too. We'll probably watch the game at my place tonight. I'll let you know if we do.

Whatever pistol you purchase you should purchase one that can be dry fired without negative consequences like the glock.

Any centerfire in good condition is able to be dry fired without problems.

That is not always true if the pistol has a hammer.

Not always. If a revolver fails it is because something a little more serious is wrong. Yes Revolvers can fail

Buy what you want to keep. Do not buy a "training" gun or a "learn to shoot" gun. Buy what you want and shoot it. It will not take long before you are comfortable with it.

1. Do not register a gun. Go buy it at a store, they'll handle a background check for you.
2. Hunter safety course would be nice. Whatever state you live in, make sure you know the laws about open carrying the gun on your person or in your vehicle. I believe there is no open carry in Texas, but there is in Louisiana.
3. Easy on the 40 caliber. They're popular, but I'm not too keen on them. Start with a cheap 22, or just buy a 9mm. I love 9mm. The Glock 17 and Springfield XDm 9mm are great, I've also heard good things about the M&P 9mm, but I've never fired one.

Finally......don't get in a rush and don't overpay for a gun.

Just saw this. Go ahead and buy a 9mm.
