eek.....no

I love my 1911, but that's a rough entry for a first time gun owner.

Shot the ruger 1911 for the first time this past weekend. Fine weapon for the price.

I left out 1911 cause I see all sorts of styles in that place as well

WHY?

When buying anything else as an adult, do you buy small then buy up? Why buy a .22 then move to a different handgun? Would you buy a smart car first before a truck? Would you buy a 27" CRT TV before your 60" flat screen? Would you buy a push reel mower before you nice self propelled or riding mower?

Buy the gun you want

I understand your point but most people are not trained to shoot correctly and a higher recoil gun is more likely to give them the yips. If someone has good training to start and practices dry firing sufficiently they should have no problems starting with a heavier caliber but I don't agree that to be the best course of action for a newer shooter that will learn alone.

I've heard good things about their 1911's. I have a Taurus now, it's a great gun for the price. I'd like to get another 1911 eventually. I had a Para before, but it was too picky about ammo.

They're more difficult to break down, they tend to be pickier about ammo, lower mag capacity, ancient design, etc.

If you buy a polymer pistol from any reputable manufacturer, it will fire just about any bullet you put through it, and you can field strip it in about 5 seconds. You can't say the same for 1911's. I love the 1911, but it's just not as practical as it was before.
