Which area(s) would you be looking at the most?

Having lived in Ruidoso and Albuquerque as a youth and still a frequent visitor, the area around Ruidoso would be my choice.

Santa Fe and Taos are incredible but prices probably much higher.

My dad has a place in Chama. That is beautiful but remote.

How remote do you want to be?

30ish minutes from a decent sized city.

Somewhere along 25 between Albuquerque and Santa Fe looks like a potential sweet spot

My buddy has land outside LasVegas NM on the edge of a national forest. Beautiful area with Elk, other wildlife, hills, trees. It was cheap and decade ago...not about now.

Chama.

Isn't that the low rider capitol on NM?

Correct, nice but in the middle of no where. But Colorado is not that far I guess.

How much time have you spent in NM? What are you looking to do? You say you don’t want remote but even ‘close to a city’ doesn’t mean you have a lot of things potentially.

Everyone dreams of just walking out their back door to hunt, but it’s really
Not a big deal to drive 30 mins down the road. Generally speaking for hunting out west it’s better to plan on being mobile anyway

Near my friend's land close to Demming so I'd have access to his elk herd.

That area down around Silver City is nice, but man oh man… the whole state is remote. Like being on another planet.

It really depends on what you're wanting to do. Since we are into fishing, snow sports and mountain biking, we've looked pretty heavily at getting a place in or near Angelfire. Prices are still pretty good. It's also further East, so a little more accessible than our other choice for fishing which would be Farmington/Chama areas, which also puts you close to southern Colorado.

We also love Santa Fe, so that's our top choice, but it would be in the city and not involve purchasing actual land. The prices are also insane, obviously. Santa Fe would be more of a 'we are going to live here half the year during retirement" than a "we are going to go here a few times a year to relax and get away from it all" destination.

Friend of ours goes to Ruidoso 2-3 times a years. Suppose to be pretty incredible there.

I have a customer/friend that lives in Los Alamos and works in Santa Fe. He has a nice house there and has a national forest behind his property.

He's constantly getting bears and cougars coming into his backyard and drinking out of his fountain. He posted a video this morning on facebook of 2 cubs coming to drink.

ETA: Customer has told me that one of the best elk herds in NM is in the section around Los Alamos.

We have a place in Angel Fire and really like it at all times of the year. If you are looking there you will find really nice places at good prices compared to other ski areas. Angel Fire is the second type of destination you mentioned, the we are going to go here a few times a year to relax type. I wish we could go more than we do but our house rents well on VRBO and that helps a lot to pay for it.

My Uncle and Aunt own a second home in Angelfire. We spend 10 days out there every other summer. It’s beautiful country. Plenty of stuff to do and see. People are pretty friendly. Property prices are pretty high but have been coming down. CA transplants have driven up property. I would love to retire in that area.

Don’t know if you have ever driven from Bozeman Montana to Gardiner Montana but that drive on hwy 89 carries you through a valley along the Yellowstone River. When I drove through there there were several big cattle farms in that valley with guys out there on tractors hauling hay out to the pastures feeding cows. The scenery in that area was incredible. Cannot imagine seeing those views everyday while working the land. If I could pick up my farm and move it that is where I would go.
