Girlfriend (no pics) is getting ready to start applying for residency programs and wants my input. New Orleans is at the top of my list but seems like she wants to go somewhere else for a few years and then move back. Where would you move if you could live anywhere in the US? I do a lot of fly fishing and hunting so am partial to areas in the mountains.

Montana, North Carolina, Denver(area), Charleston. It is really going to depend on her specialty and who has the best program for said specialty.

North Georgia, South Carolina, North Carolina, or Tennessee. Out west would be pretty cool but damn those winters

Montana, Colorado, Charleston, Oregon and Utah are pretty high up on my list. She’s going into ENT. Can most likely get into most anywhere she’d want to, which helps.

Birmingham has a large Louisiana contingent. Mainly due to UAB. COL is great. The airport is large enough to get anywhere in the country, but not overcrowded. Gulf is 3.5 hours away. Mountains 5. Public schools are fantastic if you have kids. Like I said, we are getting a ton of LA people moving in.

East Tenn or the western side of North Carolina for me.
I would still want to be within and easy drive of some good restaurants and bars, so that does limit the idea of living in the middle of nowhere.

Once you move, you aren't coming back. Not that there is anything wrong with that...

Spent this morning fly fishing a local river with a buddy and discussing preparations for hunting this fall. Middle and East TN is an outdoors paradise.

Lots to consider, but I can tell you that New Orleans would not be in the top 1.000.

I love New Orleans, but unless you are a big fisherman, the outdoor situation kind of sucks. Same goes most of the state.

When I got out of college I thought backpacking would be something I would like. I took a wilderness skills course and got some of the gear. Went on a few trips with a local outfitter to Miss and up around Alexandra. Reality later set in that there isn't anything worth a damn whitin 7 or 8 hours.

I want to be near mountains and such with real natural beauty. I work in oil and gas so I'm kind of limited with living in south La or east Texas until I retire.

Your first choice would be NOLA?

Well there is a reason Nola housing/condo prices have shot way up the last 10 years. People want to live there.

I know this debate won't go well on the outdoor board.

I have seen Charleston in several posts. My son lived there for several years and we visited a number of times. If I could retire anywhere it may be there.

Birmingham is definitely an option. I lived there on a lake (don’t remember the name) for a couple months during/after Katrina. Really enjoyed Birmingham. My cousin also lived there for several years and he loved it.

Take a vacation to the Smokey’s every summer and love it. Actually going back to Bryson City middle of July. Could definitely see myself living around there.

I’m not against not coming back, but both our families live on the Northshore and I love redfish too damn much

I agree. Love that area.
