I won’t judge, just curious, anybody here forked out for one of those STX ranch whitetails

Or know any baw that has?

Just watched Cam Hanes video at Cactus Jack’s Ranch so I got to digging in on their price list.

160” buck is $8,500
180” buck is $16,500, crazy jump for 20” inches
200” is $26,500

That just seems absurd to me, I’m not like angry jealous. If I had the disposable income to do it I guess I would but living out west and hunting on public for just the price of a tag, with a chance at one of those deer I feel like I could never justify it.

Just curious if anyone here has thrown down on one of those ranches. Again, not judging, just curious what the experience was and if you felt it was worth it

Cam shot what looked to be a 150-160 deer, I’m sure it was paid for though just because of his name and the exposure.

Most of the time it’s folks that could not hunt public if they tried. They aren’t hunters.

Actually most of the time it’s clients. Clients of big corporations that couldn’t bait a line.

Don’t let it upset you.

That’s right. The only people I know who have ever been to a high fence ranch in Texas are my father in law and my wife’s uncle and they were taken by the readymix company we did the most business with at the time. It’s exactly like you said. Be a big enough client for somebody’s business and they’ll pay for you to shoot deer like that. What’s 16-50k when someone spends upwards of 7 figures with your company every year? Only difference is the two of them both were at the time /are avid hunters.

Judging by your handle you are in O&G? Become valuable at your job and you won't pay for a deer.

I’m not anymore, was a short lived gig when I made username. I love my public land Elk, Mule Deer, and Pronghorn hunts though.

Not hating on anybody lucky enough to go to these ranches was just curious more than anything after seeing prices.

It is a different world, coming from LA and MS these deer might as well be retarded.

It is pretty amazing and I have been blessed. I refuse to go on high fence hunts.

All that being said I would never pay for a whitetail hunt. My public land western hunts are way more fulfilling.

I ever hit one of these B+ lottos I am buying a place in STX. It is the playground of the ultra wealthy.

I haven't done it but I would go in a heartbeat if my friends and family had as much time to screw off as I do. I think some of those ranches would be fun if I could get my brother and 2 of my wife's cousin's husbands to go. Whiskey, smoke and good times.

Mu wife wouldn't blink an eye if I told her I was going.

I feel like a lot of people miss this fact. Many of the guys that hunt these high fence ranches with exotics or huge deer (or even huge free range ranches in STX) are doing so because they’re a customer or a client of some company that uses the ranch trips as entertainment/networking. There’s generally not an ego about it from the person that kills an animal - it’s just a part of their professional world.

I totally understand the pride aspect/respect for the process of hunting aspect, and I agree completely. Just saying that those folks generally aren’t even thinking about it like that.

You hit the nail on the head. If you are seeing pics and what not chances are they are being brought on hunt.

Prettymuch. Beats the hell out of going to Disney world. Most of those deer are going to end up on office walls, bigger it is the more money you made the one who paid for it.

It ain't nearly as cool as it seems.

I haven't been on a corporate sponsored big buck shoot yet, but I've done other corporate paid stuff and know quite a few people who did vendor paid trophy deer hunts. Nothing canned is fun at all. I'd rather shoot does at my own camp than 180" trophies somewhere else. There's zero sense of accomplishment in that. It's like hunting cattle, except the meat isn't as good.

I agree but that’s really what I was referring to. These guys aren’t doing it for some sense of accomplishment. I’ve rarely seen guys killing animals with tags in their ears bragging about it. Mostly just there for the relationships and to have a good time.

I went with my step-dad to a high fence place about 20 years ago. I got invited but it was a business thing. I was supposed to shoot a specific 8 point. Saw him once and never could get a shot. Last hunt guide went to Mexico the night before and picked me up still drunk smelling like tequila and Mexican whores. Asked me if I could hunt by myself. Didn't shoot anything but he picked me up early and I'm pretty sure he didn't sleep and kept drinking. Killed two fallow bucks in 5 minutes riding with him in the bronco. It was fabulous !!

A friend of mine’s son worked for some multi millionaire in Lafayette.Boss man took a liking to the young man and would take him to his high fence ranch in Texas quite a few times, they flew there in a private jet.Young man killed some hammers.
Once they flew to Kentucky and old man paid $30,000 for the young guy to shoot one of the freaky horn bucks at a deer farm.

If I had the money,I wouldn’t mind going to a high fence place in Texas.
What I would really prefer would be going on some high dollar fishing trips
with top notch guides such as Brazil for Peacock bass, deep sea trips for Marlin ,giant tunas and such.

You’re public land western hunts aren’t necessarily cheap, either.

Nope, but have a friend who has had several ranches out Sonora way over the years. We have hunted whitetail and Axis for free. In fact, will be going back in July.

I would not pay the money to hunt whitetail as I have better deer in my backyard here in Missouri. I am overall a meat hunter so not paying thousands for a trophy hunt. However, I have no problem with people who pay for those “expensive” hunts. As some have noted, many of these are business related and taking care of clients. To each his own.

Have a friend who has elk, bear, moose mounts and has done some fantastic hunts. He pays for them or is “comped” these hunts. He honestly has never skinned, much less processed anything he has killed. He likes clean, comfortable hunts with not too much effort involved and then others can get his meat ready. I doubt he can even sight in a rifle with a scope.

Again, I have no problem with his style of hunting although we are polar opposites.

I went to one in north Texas last year. The free range ranch I wanted to go back to in east Texas didn’t have an opening and the lead guide quit so the alcoholic owner is running it now. Also, went to the king ranch and shot an nilgai which is free range but my wife didn’t like the meat so didn’t wanna go back there to hear her bitch for another year about the taste of the meat. Anyhow, the two guys I was going with needed a quick trip due to work/kids schedules so a Montana or western Texas hunt were out. Booked this place, drove in Friday, hunted Friday, Saturday, left Sunday am. Home to watch daughters Christmas play Sunday pm. Really just paid for convenience. Also, went to shoot axis but didn’t see a shooter. The ranch is 3000 acres high fence and half of it is very thick forest. So at the last minute I shot a 165” whitetail.

Not unless he works for one of the smaller independent companies. All the O&G Majors have put major clamps on entertainment, some cannot even take tickets to sporting events, or really, anything other than lunch. Now, in the old days…..

That's not too extreme - If you consider costs of lease, feed, travel, food, a place to stay.

I probably spend $5,000 a year for a chance at a 130-140"
and usually don't kill one
