Never been before, but seeing all of these boats heading out makes me want to get involved.

Not sure where to start?

Before someone new starts duck hunting in an area 2 hours away with a long boat ride and no cell phone reception, would recommend starting out somewhere closer to you.

Manchac or Prairie or Big Branch.

But even better than that, find someone who will take you and knows what they are doing. Pay for guided hunts if you need to to start.

Easy route to get in is Big Branch like jb said.

I've been hunting there for 6 years, it's not the best by any means. You'll probably have better overall success with Biloxi and a mud boat. Takes time to learn it.

Big Branch is easy and if you live on the NS it's a nice place to work into. Key Points:

No devils, only water-cooled. Which if that's your route it only goes for running in the lake or on the east side of Bayou Lacombe.

So only kayaks/rogues on the West side which is where I hunt 95% of the time. It's a decent amount of work and it's first come first serve.

But for the most part, the sugar-asses stay out if it's not full of birds.

Ultimately, its easy to drive to, easy to get into the marsh, and not too crowded other than the opening weekend of the splits. Your best chance to limit is just as cold fronts come through, Big Branch is just a pit stop for the birds as they move farther down.

Good luck if you head out there next weekend. It'll be a clusterf***. Best days to go IMO are Thanksgiving morning and Christmas morning...if you're not busy playing Santa Claus.

I just moved to covington and only have a kayak. Is there any duck hunting on st Tammany wildlife refuge? Can I access it through Bayou Cane? Would i be allowed to paddle out to the lake and hunt divers? Thanks for the help!

Man, I got a couple reports the Biloxi Marsh was a zoo. It must have a whole bunch more hunters from when I used to hunt back there. 8 years ago we hardly saw anyone in there.

St. Tammany is the same as Big Branch so ya that would be the easiest place to get to.

You can access it through Bayou Cane. Keep three things in mind though... you can only the east side of Bayou Cane, that is the edge of refuge, everything to the west Fountainbleau SP...Bayou Cane gets a decent amount of traffic for a small bayou...and it's a long paddle, you're looking at nearly a mile til you get to the first cut that will take you to the marsh. You're looking at a 1.25 mile paddle just to get to the first pond.

You would be allowed to paddle out to the lake to hunt divers, they have a guy that hunts in a plywood box right off the beach and shoots the shite out of dosgris and pouldeau but that's all he shoots.

It’s a zoo because everyone kills ducks there. Hell, a friend of mines brother in law went hunting out there for the second time in his life with his son and buddy and they shot 18 ducks this morning. This guy has no clue what he’s doing

So is a kayak necessary for duck hunting? Like I said...never been, never hunted before but something I think could be a good tradition to start with my boys.

There are places you can walk from bayou lacombe but doesn't give you many options. You can hunt the lakeshore for divers. Kayak or pirogue gives you the option to go further and deeper.

Lake Van said you can hunt with a kayak. Either in it or just yakking to a pond and pulling up and just sitting. The ponds aren't that big, but there is a big pond/lake in between Cane and Bayou Lacombe that I hunted a lot in the past and thought about throwing fast grass on my yak and hunting in the middle.

I just find a spot and hunt on shore and pull my yak in little ways in the back. It's better if you have reeds to pull into. That's mainly what I look for. The grounds a little harder and you have tall reeds that give you more cover

You have a dog with you or you just paddle out and get what you kill?

would it be easier to drive down Lake Road (along Bayou Lacombe) and put in a yak to paddle over to the lakes west of the road? That's still refuge right?

OG...I've hunted both ways, buddy I used to go with would bring his dog, lost fewer ducks, but I use the yak to pick up my birds for 90% of my hunts in there. I would wait for a lull but just know you're going to get buzzed by birds while in the kayak...it's freaking aggravating.

Hammer...

This is how I hunt, I pick a bayou on the west side of lake road or go to the end and paddle down the beach, depends on where I want to hunt. They have a couple of land-locked (more fresh than brackish) ponds along the lake that are extremely easy to get to and have grass in them. You just have to know which ones are good, some of the nicer/bigger ones are pretty deep and the smaller potholes are shallower and get more action.

Madtown: thanks for info. maybe we'll see each other out there! I've blind hunted NELA most of my life, but have a kayak now for a couple of years and want to start doing this.

I'll probably be out there Friday scouting, although I don't think I'll go deal with all that mess opening morning plus I'll be alone this weekend. Hope for a cold front next week, I'll be hunting Thanksgiving morning.

Bring your dam gun. All it takes is one bunch and you hit a double and have something to cook while you watch the LSU game.
