His name was Beamer. He was 14 years old. He was a West Highland Terrier. He was in pain and suffering from kidney failure. I don’t think I will ever be able to own a dog again.

Sorry for your loss.
The pain eases over time and you think you can never have another as good as the last. But then you get another and even though he may not eclipse the first or sometimes they do, somehow they leave a mark on you one day you catch yourself scratching their ear saying “ you a good dog ol boy”

I am very sorry for your loss and know it all too well. Being an ole fart I have ahd to do this 3 times and it never gets easier. I mourn for them but feel so honored to have them spend their lives with us. Think of the 14 years of joy and hapiness and over time you will realize its just part of Gods plan. Dogs lives are short but their souls burn brightly. The loss is worth all the joy they bring.

Just this side of heaven is a place called Rainbow Bridge.

When an animal dies that has been especially close to someone here, that pet goes to Rainbow Bridge. There are meadows and hills for all of our special friends so they can run and play together. There is plenty of food, water and sunshine, and our friends are warm and comfortable.

All the animals who had been ill and old are restored to health and vigor. Those who were hurt or maimed are made whole and strong again, just as we remember them in our dreams of days and times gone by. The animals are happy and content, except for one small thing; they each miss someone very special to them, who had to be left behind.

They all run and play together, but the day comes when one suddenly stops and looks into the distance. His bright eyes are intent. His eager body quivers. Suddenly he begins to run from the group, flying over the green grass, his legs carrying him faster and faster.

You have been spotted, and when you and your special friend finally meet, you cling together in joyous reunion, never to be parted again. The happy kisses rain upon your face; your hands again caress the beloved head, and you look once more into the trusting eyes of your pet, so long gone from your life but never absent from your heart.

Then you cross Rainbow Bridge together....

Every time I read one of these sad threads I start to cry all over again for my great dogs who have passed on. So sad for you right now.

In time go find another one at a rescue. There are many great dogs waiting for the perfect home for them. It won't be like the one you just lost but they will love you for it.

RIP Beamer.

Lost a 12 year old last Thursday. On day 5 now and I'm at almost peace with it. Try and keep yourself occupied and things will get easier with time.

“The Power of the Dog”

THERE is sorrow enough in the natural way
From men and women to fill our day;
And when we are certain of sorrow in store,
Why do we always arrange for more?
Brothers and Sisters, I bid you beware 5
Of giving your heart to a dog to tear.

Buy a pup and your money will buy
Love unflinching that cannot lie—
Perfect passion and worship fed
By a kick in the ribs or a pat on the head. 10
Nevertheless it is hardly fair
To risk your heart for a dog to tear.

When the fourteen years which Nature permits
Are closing in asthma, or tumour, or fits,
And the vet’s unspoken prescription runs 15
To lethal chambers or loaded guns,
Then you will find—it’s your own affair—
But … you’ve given your heart to a dog to tear.

When the body that lived at your single will,
With its whimper of welcome, is stilled (how still!). 20
When the spirit that answered your every mood
Is gone—wherever it goes—for good,
You will discover how much you care,
And will give your heart to a dog to tear.

We’ve sorrow enough in the natural way, 25
When it comes to burying Christian clay.
Our loves are not given, but only lent,
At compound interest of cent per cent.
Though it is not always the case, I believe,
That the longer we’ve kept ’em, the more do we grieve: 30
For, when debts are payable, right or wrong,
A short-time loan is as bad as a long—
So why in—Heaven (before we are there)
Should we give our hearts to a dog to tear?
