Wife awoke me to a scratching noise in the ceiling. So I got up there before work and sure enough in that corner of the attic there's a danged mouse staring back at me. Heading to get traps after work. I have spray in foam insulation from the slab to the peak of the roof, and while I know mice can chew thru it, I didn't expect it to. Point being, it's nice and cool in my attic but makes a good retreat for a mouse apparently. How can I prevent this from re-occurring? get a cat to patrol the house from the exterior perimeter? I sure don't want snakes chasing these things up there.

But don't feed it, just put a bowl of water up there.

Have you considered buying a mouse trap?

You said the attic has a cool temperature? Put a cat up there.

Or just put a snake. I'd rather have a harmless snake vs 25 mice.

A mouse will always find a way to get in the attic. There's really no stopping it.

Bait packs. Throw them in your attic. Problem solved.

This. I prefer the solid cubes. It kills and dries them out so no smell. Just toss them around randomly.

I don't know how far advanced rodent poison has come over the years, but the one and only time I used it in a house I owned over 25 yrs. ago found me gagging from the smell of a rat rotting in a wall cavity.

It got so bad I found the area the smell was coming from and removed some sheetrock to get the rat out and it was downright putrid. Then I had to clean and deodorize the area, repair the sheetrock and paint the room.

From then on, it's only been snap traps for me.

Tack a couple glue traps to the rafters, check it every other day. It's fricked up but mice are attracted to the sound of their own struggling, and one stuck mouse will catch two or three more if left there. You don't want poisoned mice burrowing themselves into your insulation.

This guy is absolutely correct!

This, unless you can create an airtight container, they're getting in.

Any frickin' day! Hell, I'd rather 25 harmless snakes than ONE mouse!

I wouldn't use poison because of the smell, but also because it kills everything that eats the dead rodents. And a dying rodent will often go back outside to die. So, you're poisoning hawks, owls, pets, foxes, and anything else that comes across it.

I actually just watched a video of a whole family of dying redtail hawks this morning that had eaten a poisoned rat. Not pretty.

Traps are better.

I disagree with others saying a mouse will find a way into your attic no matter what. If you have a sprayfoamed attic/house then you shouldn't have any entrance hole....buts its obvious you do. Mice/rats only chew through stuff if they are already in their home areas and searching for different routes. They don't go out searching for a new home and start randomly chewing holes to see if there is anything on the other side.

Get a few traps and kill the mouse. Then search high and low for a hole it could've gotten in. Sounds like somewhere they didn't spray or a tradesmen did a sloppy job of sealing a perforation with utilities.

You do realize just how small a hole a mouse needs to gain access???? Something as small as a quarter is way big enough for a mouse to get in and out of a building. Don't think I'd want to be searching my attic in the summertime for that small an opening.

He said his attic was foamed so I assume its conditioned as well. And since the attic is conditioned you'd want to find the hole both for mice reasons and for air leaks.

Thanks for the replies. I thought about throwing a cat up there but I don't want it to end up like that fried pussy cat on Griswolds family vacation with all those electrical wires up there.

And yes its foamed real good but like a previous poster said, they can chew thru it and it doesn't have to be a big hole at all. Guess when I'm done killing I'll take a flashlight and look for holes in that area and spray with more foam.
