Well fellas, my wife saw a rat in the house. According to her its the size of a bobcat. so its anywhere between a tiny mouse to an actual large rat.
This happened a few weeks ago
I havent seen it but I put three traps out with peanut butter an cant catch it.
She saw it again yesterday morning. Im not finding rat shite anywhere so I guess its possible its not staying inside long.
is there better bait or am I doing something else wrong? We have a large field behind our house so im guessing thats where he came from

Put a slim jim on the trap. I had one that wouldn't touch peanut butter but ate that slim jim the first night

If you have a rat the size of a bobcat you need to get the hell out

If you don't have pets or kids, a block of t omcat does the trick.

get the sticky plastic and put it down in some tight spots where the dog and kid won't go. Nacho slim jim for bait. Start a roux..

You gotta think like a rat to catch one.

perfect thanks
If the Slim Jim fails, chew the gum until it gets to that point where it's as sweet and juicy as it can be and bait your trap with that.
Growing up, we'd always go to the camp about a month or so ahead of season to fix this and patch that. The adults would bet which kid could catch the most mice on wooden traps...the cheapo bubble gum rarely let me down.

Rats are friggin' smart. If that rat has ever survived a rat trap, there's a very good chance it'll never go near one again. Go to Home Depot and get yourself one of these.
Inside that thing are three electrode plates. You put the bait way in the back of it. When the rat touches two plates, it's all over. It fries that little bastard for like two minutes to make sure it's dead. The way they're designed, it's nearly impossible for the rat to back out once the current starts flowing and it's just dead right there. This prevents a near miss that'll teach the rat to stay away.
There'a little LED light on top that blinks when it's been triggered. You just turn the trap off and carry the trap to the trash and slide the dead rat out by tilting the trap. No touching dead rats. Rebait and turn it back on and you're ready for the next one.
They work best if you bait it two or three nights in a row turned off. If you can see they've gotten at the bait two or three nights in a row, you know they're going way in the trap and have identified a food source, so they'll be back. Then you turn it on after they're used to it and let the little bastard ride the lightning.
