Do they stretch out after a period of time or do you just look for wear spots?
I bought a new mower belt replacement for my john deere la145 from Hexautoparts, but if it's not necessary yet I'll hold on to it.
I have about 2 year on the john deere oem belts.
Thanks.

What he said. But I do keep spare belts on hand for when the time comes.

When it breaks. Why would you change a belt that is still working. I can see keeping one on hand for when the original breaks though.

I keep a spare but will not replace the old belt until it shreds....

Run it til it breaks. Use pantyhose to finish mowing when it breaks. Get new belt.

Drive belt for hydro every two years.
Deck belt and blades, every year.
I'm very hard on a mower and cutting 3-4 acres.

Mine is rough on belts and loses a couple a year it seems. I got fed up with dealing with it and bought him suspenders for Christmas.

Wait for it to break or start slipping beyond the level where I can tighten it. Once in seven years for my self-propelled

My belt broke at a little over 700 hrs so replace at 700 hrs.

Paid literally 2.5 times what online prices were buying locally when an object caused belt to break and rain forecast prevented waiting delivery.
Now I keep a spare even though I only very rarely need one.

they dont stretch they wear on the side that runs on the pulley so they loosen as the "v" part wears.
normally belts last a couple of years but its like the tires on your car, how fast it wears out depends on how much you use it and the quality of the belt
not saying you need oem belts but good quality belts, just like good quality tires, last longer then cheap ones do.
at least every 10-12 grass cuttings the blades should be sharpened as well, dull blades causes more drag and wears on the belt more as it struggles to spin the blades.
another thing that can affect belt life is the pulley condition
my snapper belt is 5/8" wide and when it wears down to only 1/2" wide the belt slips and stops cutting in tall grass. when you take the belt off it still looks like new and you can only see the difference when its put next to a brand new belt
