If I'm not mistaken, our Louisiana politicians passed a law stating that military veterans can now conceal carry without any sort of classes or special training.
How many of my fellow vets are taking 'em up on this!

Louisiana Revised Statute 14:95(A)(1) generally makes it illegal to carry a firearm concealed on your person unless you have a permit.
The new exception for honorably discharged military is found in 14:95(M). You must have a LA driver’s license or state ID with Veteran on it, or a regular LA driver’s license or state ID plus a DD-214 with honorable discharge status noted on it.
With a concealed carry permit, other states offer reciprocity so that you can carry in those states with a LA permit. The military exemption is only good if you are in LA. In other states, it will depend on whether they have a similar exemption and whether it applies to non-residents. Note that the LA exemption applies only to LA residents.
Here is the actual language of the amendment to La. R.S. 14:95.
M. The provisions of Paragraph (A)(1) of this Section shall not apply to a resident of Louisiana if all of the following conditions are met:
(1) The person is twenty-one years of age or older.
(2) The person is not prohibited from possessing a firearm under R.S. 14:95.1, R.S. 40:1379.3(C)(5) through (17), 18 U.S.C. 922(g), or any other state or federal law.
(3)(a) The person is a reserve or active-duty member of any branch of the United States Armed Forces; a member of the Louisiana National Guard or the Louisiana Air National Guard; or a former member of any branch of the United States Armed Forces, the Louisiana National Guard, or the Louisiana Air National Guard who has been honorably discharged from service.
(b) At all times that a person is in possession of a concealed handgun pursuant to R.S. 40:1379.3(B)(2), that person shall have on his person proof that he meets the qualifications of Subparagraph (a) of this Paragraph demonstrated by one of the following:
(i) A valid military identification card.
(ii) A valid driver's license issued by the state of Louisiana displaying the word “Veteran” pursuant to R.S. 32:412(K).
(iii) A valid special identification card issued by the state of Louisiana displaying the word “Veteran” pursuant to R.S. 40:1321(K).
(iv) For a member released from service who does not qualify to have the word “Veteran” displayed on a state issued driver's license or special identification card, a Department of Defense Form 214 (DD-214) indicating the character of service as “Honorable” or “Under Honorable Conditions (General)” and a valid driver's license or special identification card issued by the state of Louisiana.

I’m thinking of suing the state under the equal protection clause.
It’s complete bullshite that we “allow” a certain class of citizen to express a right while forcing others to pay a tax to express that same right.

Both. Haven't decided if I will renew. I hate classes.

Still need a permit to carry in states that have reciprocity. Might be a good idea to keep it if you travel.

This vet agrees with you. Special classes suck.
I'm ok with military service substituting for the training class, but everybody, police included, should have to get a permit or nobody should have to get a permit.

Got the "Veteran" stamp on my new license 6-8 weeks ago, but was carrying prior to that. Stay Heavy.

I already had a concealed carry before the law went into effect.... So I won't renew and will instead carry under the new law going forward.

You might need it to carry into other states. Alabama does not require a permit starting in Jan 23 but I will keep mine current due to the fact that not all states do this. Only 25 bucks a year.

I'm a Veteran with a Lifetime permit. I got a letter in the mail that I still have to take the class every 5 years which is due in May. So now I don't need to even have a permit at all?

Military training and concealed weapon training for self defense are nothing alike. It's a double standard.

Wow, I did not know about this. Thanks for the heads up. I've been meaning to get my permit but haven't had the time the past year.
Meh, there were some individuals on the range I did not want to be around because they had no clue what they were doing.

No question, and most of the military never trains with sidearms at all, but let's not kid ourselves that a one day class is turning someone into a competent firearms handler either. It's just checking a box.

Yeah, this idea from the general/ignorant public that because you're in the military, you automatically know how to handle weapons is completely ridiculous
