If you don't have a budget, get a Benelli M4.

870 will work fine. A shorter barrel would be plus.

Remington 870 pump is a good choice. Affordable and lethal. As far as I'm concerned, you can't beat a shotgun with #6 birdshot for home defense. That shite will tear up an intruder and won't do much collateral damage to the house.

At least none that can't be repaired pretty easy-----unless you hit the big screen HDTV.

Nope.If you want to stop someone, use buckshot. Can't believe people still buy into the birdshot for HD myth.

Don't buy a new (made after 2007) 870. They suck. No budget, go Benelli m4. Lower than that, Beretta 1301. If you are stuck on a pump, Benelli Supernova Tactical.

I disagree here. You're not trying to stop someone from 50 ft. away. Most shots you will take in your home will be from 15 ft. away or less, and birdshot will tear up body parts from that distance.

Then you don't have the shot that misses tearing through walls causing damage or harm to others in the house.

Meh....from that distance it's not the spackling work that's a pain in the arse; it's the carpet and dry cleaning that's a pain in the arse

Yep.

And I was guilty of this until relatively recently. Youtubers have done wonders to quell this. Basically, I've gone all the way to AR-15 as a home defense platform for a lot of very good reasons.

But, agreed - if your intention is to shoot someone to disable/kill them, you have to use buckshot, period.

Oh yeah, when I think of home defense nothing quite says it like an AR. Let's spray bullets that can penetrate through 3-4 rooms unless they hit a stud or a heavy piece of furniture before possibly hitting the wife or kids.

I hear you loud and clear, but the over penetration issue with the .223/5.56 and the way OUR house is laid out (kid bedrooms on the far side of the house) is too much of a concern for us to go the full AR route. I think we've settled on the 12 gauge/9 mm tandem (two shooter team) as our choice. But the over penetration issue exists with any useful caliber/load that would be considered for home defense.

But out street is very, very quiet.

As far as a choice, you can't go wrong with at short barrel 870 or Mossy. Basically the Samsung and Iphone of shotguns. There are tons of aftermarket accessories (useful and otherwise) for both.

Finally, what ever you get, PRACTICE moving through your house in the dark with the weapon (unloaded and no mag) at a low ready or indoor ready. You'll be surprised at how you have to alter your movements and how you have to bring the gun to the ready position. Better to find out such things ahead of time then in a situation where milliseconds matter.

Well. The upside to all this is. Most home invasions happen in the middle of the day when no one is home or someone is there without a car. So the likelihood of you turning into Rambo in your living room at 2 am is not very high.

Read the entire paragraph and don't cherry pick....

I'll cherry pick when its what you did by stating its a 223 issue first.

quote:

Choose defense rounds that are of .223 caliber or smaller if you are worried about overpenetration.

quote:

Despite the popularity of the round, too few realize that 9mm ball ammo can easily punch through not just one but several interior walls. By contrast, .223 rifle ammunition tends to tumble, turn and slow down when penetrating barriers, even more than a 9mm fired from some pistols. Many shooters like to debate this point, and admittedly on the surface it doesn’t seem logical, but studies done by SWAT teams over a decade ago revealed this phenomenon to be fact and it was one of the main reasons a lot of tactical teams transitioned to M-4s/AR-15s and gave up the H&K MP-5 SMG in the 80s and 90s.
