Is there a high quality push button reel out there. Not looking for a zebco 33. Looking for a high gear ratio smooth quality reel for my kid to use in the river behind the house and pond fishing. He is 9 and not ready for a baitcaster and doesnt like a spinning reel.

Zebco Bullet - $100
That's the bee's knees when it comes to spincast reels. Smoothest drag and best casting performance.
That being said, I was throwing a tightened down bait caster at 7 years old on the right rod/bait combo. He should learn that now and deal with the growing pains.

Zebco Bullet. But there’s plenty of reviews claiming it isn’t really worth the cost.

Learned on a 5000 abu at that age, new reels are light years ahead of those units. Get him a lews and spool with 14# mono. Have taught many how to throw that have never done it before.

bought the gf a Zebco bullet when we started dating so she could fish with me. It lasted about two months of bass fishing/fighting stripers/goo. We returned it to Academy and I talked her into using the money on a Speed Spool and she hasn't looked back since. The bullet is great, but it's not gonna endure more than a couple hundred bass/large fish before it starts to grind on retrieve.

Zebco 33 from my early '80s youth was legit!

It's like asking for a Camaro that isn't a Camaro.

Still running my zebco omegas and Diawa black & Golds for my grandkids.

I forgot about the omegas. I had one as a kid.

Johnson Century back in the day was really nice. Not sure of the quality anymore since it's be 20 years since I've seen one.

Anyone tried using braid in one of these? Seems like memory of mono messes them up. Trying to figure out best setup for my kid.

I would think braid might nick the bail pickup but I don't know that for a fact.
There ain't a thing in the world wrong with a spincast reel. Most people learned to fish with one. They aren't built to last forever anymore...I have some nearly 50 and maybe older than 50 year old Zebco 33s that still work well...they make some noise but they are great for kids and folks who don't get to fish a lot. I'd think any high end spincast reel would be sufficient for a kid until they can master a casting reel....and I bet most do that pretty quick wanting to fit in....

I have 2 Bullets. Have had trouble with them but Zebco has been good about free repair. Bought 2 so I will never be without one.

Curado DC makes backlashing pretty impossible. But I agree with the others, Make him learn. It'll only take a few hours, and he will love it once he gets it. My wife's spinning reel fricked up a few weeks back and I wasn't leaving so I set the brakes on one of my easiest baitcasters, and within 5 or 6 casts she was throwing a weightless fluke into the wind with no birds nest. She even caught her first bass on a baitcaster that day. Easy peasy.

I remember watching one of the old Bass Pros who recommended using one of these better Zebcos to skip baits under docks. Could have been David Fritz, Tommy Biffle or Mark Davis or somebody of their vintage. Never got one for that purpose but a high quality reel of that type might work. Otherwise we spend $250 to over $300 for the Shimano's or Diawa's that are supposed to be almost backlash free. Hell I might buy a Zebco.

Excellent for this, reason I originally got the Omega.

Omega use to have two versions.
I first got the silver one which was slightly less than the black ones. They did not last.
Zebco gave me a credit which I got the small and large Omegas in black which comes with two handles. Took the bearing out cleaning it, relubing it, and the larger one I do have braid on it.
Knock on wood they held up over 10 years.
I do have zebco’s from the 60’s and 70’s.
Keep these for show in my office.
