Quality hull w a new engine. No brainer. Just like all these old Kenner 24v refurbishes.

Nice rig, but a little smaller than I’m looking for.

if you can find a Maverick Master Angler you should put that high on your list, they are very well made and the ride is dry and smooth. They are not the lightest and you wont get into the real skinny water but the ride and fishing performance more than makes up for it. The old actioncraft 1720 is also a fine boat if you run across one. Check the hull truth and craigslist in Florida

Good boat but OP sounds like he wants bigger.

Actioncraft has 2 18ft models

They also have a really sharp 19ft Bay boat that would probably fit OPs needs.

Hewes Lappy hull

Older boat but they are built like tanks.

I love these old Lappy hulls. Will last a lifetime if taken care of.

How do you like your cayenne? I plan on getting one as soon as I graduate next spring.

*Just saw your response to another poster. How well does it pole?

I’ve been in the market as well ever since I sold my gheenoe. Haven’t rushed into anything since I have a bay boat and enough friends with skiffs to make it work for now. I’ve been thinking really really hard about designing and building one myself. Just need to find a little time to design it.

If you are a little handy, I wouldn’t be afraid of an older hull. On an older hull I would sound the transom and have the gas tank checked for leaks; otherwise, most of the stuff will be visible. An older Hewes or Maverick would be my choice for your budget. Or, an old Egret hull — a man can always dream.

If you buy an older hull be very careful of weight distribution when adding a trolling motor. Multiple batteries in the stern can cause the boat to squat when you let off the throttle or porpoise.

It’s heresy in the modern four stroke world but the Yamaha two stroke 90 was and is an awesome engine.

I have a Mitzi Skiff and really like it. It’s a touch smaller (17’) than what you’re looking for but the decks are huge and give you plenty of fishing space. Put an ipilot on it the other day and can troll around from the poling platform.

It’s pretty easy to pole, I consider myself a novice on a poling platform but still push it around well. Very responsive.
It’s easier than some other boats I’ve pushed around.

I wouldn’t hesitate buying one. It’s been a great boat, especially for the price. A lot of skiffs out there with the same concept but twice the starting price.

Yep... Hewes 16 in particular. The 90 2stroke matches perfectly. The ones that are repowered with 115 4strokes have horrible squatting issues. Then add a battery or two more and a guy on the poling platform and that arse is sagging.

After doing some research over the weekend it looks like a Hewes redfiher 18 or Action Craft 1820 may fit my wants well. Now just have to wait out a deal.

I have a Blackjack 256 but wanted something smaller to chase the reds in the marsh. I researched for a long time and went bak and forth between aluminum flat boat and a flats/poling skiff. I ended up deciding on a poling skiff, even though I really dont plan to pole the boat much. After a lot of looking I got a ridiculous deal on VERY gently used Hells Bay Professional. They may be a bit above your budget, but if you can stretch it they hold their value very well. The Pro may be a bit smaller than you are looking for, but maybe try to find an older Marquesa... it may fit the bill for what you are looking for.

Jon Miller from youtube pretty much convinced me to get one. He takes his everywhere from the interior marshes of Delacroix to the Breton Sound rigs. It seems like a really good boat for our fishery.

I absolutely love Jon Miller's videos. He isn't as "lively" as Marsh Man by any stretch, but he is clearly a very knowledgable guy and is good at getting his point across.

A little smaller boat, but the new Ankona Advent is a pretty sweet setup, but max HP is 60
