This will be a small investment just to ping targets at 50-100yds after work with the work fellas, and the occasional varmint hunt. I plan to throw a Leupold rim fire rifle scope on it as well.

I like the .17HMR, but if I’m going to cycle a few hundred rounds a month through it I sure do lean towards the .22LR simply to reduce ammo costs.

Thoughts?

CZ 457 American in whatever caliber you want. You can buy the other two barrels and it only takes about two minutes to swap the barrel and caliber. Go with the Lux if you want one with iron sights.

CZ....

You can get the 22 and 17 in a combo with both barrels.

If you plan on shooting that much, I would go with the .22LR. It's a good varmint round and the cheapest to shoot.

Man, if that is the case, you would love to be able to suppress this gun. Get something threaded and go 22lr to have that option down the road. Hearing the ping of a steel target being louder than the gun that your cheek is resting on is pure therapy.

Damn, I just looked this up and that’s pretty awesome. This may be a winner.

Get one with adjustable objective. I didn't and really regret it.

I think you've answered your own question. With few exceptions, every rimfire platform will have a .22 LR option. The cost gets absurd, frankly, for .22Mag and even more so for.17HMR. I see some specialty situations where either (or both) might be preferable to .22LR but plinking and occasional varmint aren't those situations, IMHO.

Cost over time is going to heavily favor the .22LR. And the more you shoot, the greater the savings will be.

The .17 HMR is really fun to plink with but it isn't as practical to hunt with as the .22 magnum. If the majority of what you will be shooting is target and squirrels I would go .22 lr. If you are throwing hogs, coyotes, etc in the mix I would shoot the .22 wmr.

Have all 3 in various forms from semi to bolt. Honestly rarely pull the .17 out for the simple fact that even the slightest wind plays hell on that round. I shoot and carry my .22 mag more than any other gun. I plink with a basic .22LR in the yard but no real use other than that. My mag has killed everything from crows to young bucks, flat and just a joy to shoot

What type of varmit and at what range? Nice thing about 17HRM is it's so flat it give you a huge MPBR advantage over 22LR and a pretty good advantage over the 22WMR. 17HMR is so incredibly accurate too. My elcheapo bone stock sub $200 Marlin XT17 shoots around an inch @ 100 yards. I'm not talking cheater 3 shot groups but good solid 10 shot groups.

I'd always say 22LR first if you don't have one. Then turn around and get a 17HMR too.

I've found I never shoot my 22WMR any more. Only reason for me to step up to 22WMR from my 17HMR is for bigger varmints at range, but I'm more likely to just grab a 223/556 instead. Maybe if my 22WMR was threaded I might reach for it more since I have a can now.

22mag is too loud to be a go-to plinking round, for me anyway

Im not saying a 22mag wont kill a pig or coyote... just not ideal. Ive killed plenty coyote with my 17. They make a 20grain hollow point..just not something i would grab first for a hog or larger animal than squirrel/rabbit

I'm a fan of the 22 Mag. I've had a 17 and liked it but, sold it and went back to the 22 Mag. Just personal preference. But, if you're going to be shooting a lot and just plinking, 22LR is your best bet.

I agree with ducksnbass, I personally love the 22 Mag for the extra umph, but I was shooting it almost daily and mostly plinking, the .22lr is a no brainer.

Now if hog hunting on a WMA, go with the 22 mag. Or if you want to shoot coyotes.
